Mexicali - A magnitude-6.9 earthquake epicentered near Mexicali has rocked all of Southern California, and set high rise buildings in Los Angeles and San Diego rocking back and forth.

Preliminary USGS information indicated the epicenter was 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, at an area that has been rocking with magnitude 3.0 quakes all week.

Strong shaking was reported in the Coachella Valley and Riverside. Highrise structures in San Diego and Los Angeles rolled, at first gently and then much more strongly. A reporter looking at a clock timed it at about 45 seconds' duration.

Earlier this weekend, a series of small-to-moderate quakes hit the geothermally-active area.

In Los Angeles, the city fire department went on earthquake status and some stalled elevators were reported. No damage was reported.

No reports of power outages were heard on city fire or police dispatch channels.

Phone calls to El Centro, about 40 miles north of the epicenter, were met with busy circuits. A police dispatcher in Yuma, Ariz. said the quake was very strong there, but no damage was reported.

The earthquake was apparently felt as far away as Phoenix and Las Vegas.

No word on damage or injuries due to this earthquake.

I know, I know 2012... Cali is doomed.

Actually I don't believe in that 2012 stuff (though my dad is really into it.). I just think Cali is going to be hit by a really big earthquake sometime in the near future, and I don't think this one today was it.

Funny, that's what all my relatives that live in Chicago say too. Of course I think if given the chance to move to SoCal they'd jump at it... ;)

It was a 7.2 and we felt it pretty good here in San Diego. My wife said the neighbors up stairs were running down the stairs screaming their heads off. I personally didnt feel it cause I was on the road known to be really bumpy so I thought it was the road..

I have experienced some earthquakes growing up in Los Angeles. Whittier narrows/Northridge and lots of others. I hate the ones that wake you up in the middle of the night.

It was a slow roller for us. I was working in the garage and didn't even feel it. Seconds after it happened, I stepped out into the back yard and couldn't figure out why the pool water was sloshing out of the pool until Tami came out and asked if I felt the earthquake. :facepalm2:

HAHAHAH... I can totally picture you with a dazed look on your face... hmmmm...

I thought a dog bumped my recliner and didnt even look to see if they did... and Mike came out of the office to ask me if I felt it.

I'm headed out to San Diego in two weeks for work, I wouldn't mind "feeling" an earthquake if there was minimal damage and no one hurt.... like me!
