View Full Version : I seem to be burning oil...

I changed my oil this morning at roughly 5,600 km. After my oil changes I always dump the used oil back in to the now empty bottles that the new oil came out of. Usually I end up with enough used oil to equal the new oil I put in. But today I only ended up with about 6.5 litres (probably something like 6.8 quarts?) of used oil. I can't really see any leaks, although I can't really see much of the engine with the cover in the way. Any thoughts or advice? I changed my oil at 1,000 km also, so almost 2 litres of oil seems like a lot to go through in 4,600 km (roughly 3,000 miles).

2 QTs low would have made the light come on. I would check the dipstick every tank of gas just to be sure.

Some oil is stuck to the parts inside the engine, some is stuck to the drain pan, some is in the filter, etc. Some oil goes through the PCV system and ends up burned in the cylinders.

Check it every few days for a couple weeks but if you're not leaving puddles I expect you're ok.

It's normal to burn a little oil... All of my recent cars have. When you broke it in to you do a good job of breaking the rings in? Some good acceleration and decels do the job.

Burning a little oil is fine, but 2 litres is a lot to be burned/left behind in the engine. I'll keep a closer eye on it now for sure.

You can have half a qt trapped in the filter alone.

Yeah but I empty that into the drain pan as well.

that probably gets about half of it out. really, if you were burning that much oil you should see a cloud in your rearview mirror...

honestly I think you've just mis-measured somewhere.

Yeah that's possible. Actually now that I think about it after having a few beers it's probably because I fill up the bottles more than 1 litre each. :drunk:

Wow am I ever an idiot :bm: LOL!

Seriously, unless you have more indications that you have a problem I recommend just checking your oil a bit more often than usual for a few weeks.

Gotcha. Was gonna do it anyway.

Thanks for the input.

I've read a few articles about break ins. I personally just drove it fairly hard ever since I've had it and it only seems to be getting stronger. Obviously ambient temps have some to do with it, but I have a hard time keeping those RE050's hooked up.
