I bought a used Dashhawk from a GRRRR8 member.
I plugged it in and it is a blank green display, nothing shows up on the screen - just a blank display.
I can't load the software due to the version of windows on my laptop.
I just plugged it in tonight after receiving it as I had some time...not a good first impression.
Suggestions?

When you plug it in can you see the screen backlight come on?
Does the screen look different plugged versus unplugged?
If it does, then you are getting power (and then you can assume that the plugs are inserted correctly)
Do you have any friends? (with different versions of Windows?)

Mine did the same thing at one point. I just updated the software and it worked.

All it does is light up with a green backlit display. There is nothing else, blank screen.
I loaded version 2.51 and no luck.

This is part of my response to an email i got from him with more detail added in... MIengineer you metnioned lemon in the email? how could it be a lemon when they still sell the things? idk it worked on an audi s4 we had tried. Only reason it didnt work on my grand am gt is cus it wasnt supported by the thing anyway and i didnt know the thing was for only certain vehicles at the time i bought it. I thought it was for all ob2 cars lol. As i said and i had not known that when i bought it. and if its a lemon why in the world would msd want 95 to check it as you said? companies are suppose to take back and or fix things that are THEIR fault. I would argue that. Besides that how could it be a lemon with the above i mentioned? Either you got false info or something else. Not bashing on you i just dont see why you told me this in the email but its not mentioned in this thread. I assure you the thing worked. What car are you using it on? did you do the update right?

I am on a Pontiac G8 forum. That should be enough to note what car I am using it on - my G8. :)
I called MSD and explained what the unit was doing even after everything they suggested - still has a blank green lit screen without anything else on the display.
The tech at MSD suggested it was a dud AKA a broken unit and MSD charges $95 to inspect and repair the product.
As far as I am concerned, this unit never worked. It should have worked as soon as it was plugged in.
Did you plug it into your Grand Am after the Audi?
Tell me where you bought it from and when because MSD says this is an old unit, not a recent one. Their warranty on it is long expired.
Damn, I remember this guy posting the ad in the for sale section. He didn't have any posts, and we were telling him that he couldn't sell anything without getting his post count up. See... THIS is why there are rules in the for sale section! People coming in off the street trying to sell shit that doesn't even work, and ripping off our members. I hate that this happened.

I am not a happy camper at this point.
I've looked at this numerous times and have tried it on my G8 and my Saab [both CAN systems] and neither work.
Going to give MSD a last ditch effort phone call to try anything else and go from there.
I think because of this, it should be a mandatory requirement that any used piece of electronic equipment like a dashhawk have active photos - photos showing the item works.
For the time being, I have opened a paypal claim for $95 unless we work something out otherwise. I did this for two reasons - if MSD can somehow tell me what else to try and it might work, i'll end the claim or if the seller doesn't want to work anything out i'll let it ride out.
I hate doing this, it is not my intent to cause problems, but i don't like this issue either.

So the seller and i were in discussions closer to splitting the fee from MSD [$~$50], Paypal was going to close my claim if I did not move it to a dispute by the 28th of this Month.
I had to escalate and they told me I was screwed. Paypal can kiss my ass for their lack of customer service and support.
I am officially out of $180 and then some now.

I am officially out of $180 thanks to a bad seller and paypal.
Are you serious?? I don't exactly understand...why did Paypal tell you that you were screwed?

Yes, I am serious and frankly quite pissed off regarding this whole situation.
"Our investigation into your claim is complete. As stated in our User
Agreement, the claims process only applies to the shipment of goods. It
does not apply to complaints about the attributes or quality of goods
received. Therefore, we are unable to reverse this transaction or issue a
refund."
What good is Paypal if they do not support the user, and force one to escalate to a dispute while we were in discussion?
Note to self - be weary of anything I buy on this or any forum. I've never had problems like this when purchasing items in 8 years on the forum I used to frequent where I've had hundreds of transactions buying/selling parts for projects. IF anything came up we would work it out in a timely manner, nothing like this situation.
I'm officially disgusted with the entire situation.

First off, I had no idea Paypal wouldn't cover items that arrived not as advertised. So I guess as long as you ship anything, even if it's the wrong item or it's broken, Paypal will side with the seller? That's pretty shitty.
Secondly, I really hate this for you, but it's not the fault of the forum. The seller was not a participating member here, and he didn't have a G8. He only came on the forum to sell that dashhawk. There was no way for anyone to know the thing didn't work, unless we asked for picture of the unit working (which should probably be done next time). I know it sucks, believe me it's happened to me before on eBay. But don't let that keep you from buying other items on this forum, because of one dishonest jackass selling you a DOA product.

I've had several issues on this forum recently with sellers either not shipping, not responding, etc. This is not the first problem I have had here actually. The others just worked themselves out much faster with direct phone calls.
Take the good with the bad, but unfortunately here it was $180 that has left my wallet, actually $230 including what the seller and I worked on.

Did you use a credit crad for the Paypal transaction?
If you did and you are still with-in your dispute window, start a charge back through your credit card bank.
Yes, I'm serious.

I did not use a credit card for this one, unfortunately. I checked that first thing. :facepalm2:

Did you try flashing the firmware?

Multiple times, multiple variants. Two of my friends have now tested it on different vehicles as well as mine - no dice.

SO you got the software to work on a computer but no luck in dumping it in? is your cable good??? You may have something wrong with cable? If we can meet up this week on Wed? then we could try my cable and see if it works?

We can give it a shot, but my friend swapped cables etc as well Friday night.

I always thought Paypal stood behind an item that wasn't functional, I guess it only applies to Ebay purchases. I've bought a couple items through various online car clubs, but knowing this I never will again. That's really BS if you ask me.
