View Full Version : Installing the under driven pulley

Hey guys, I installed my pulley over the weekend and to make it possible I made a bolt to pull the pulley on with. It's the stock bolt cut and then we welded on the same size bolt to it which made it a little over an inch longer. We warmed the pulley to make it slip on easier and then cranked it down to a point and then swapped it out with the new ARP bolt torqued to 230ftlbs. To keep the crank from spinning we took the inspection cover off the trans and stuck a small crow bar (long screw driver would work) between the flywheel and the converter using the one of the bolt points to keep it from turning while my buddy cranked on the pulley till tight.

Remember getting the stock pulley off requires a special puller. OTC part number 6267 works great!

You will also need a new gates belt # is K060747 or Dayco belt number 5060740

If anyone wants to use this bolt let me know. I can UPS it to you and save you the hassle of finding the right one.

Cheers,
Chris

I went to a fastener supplier and just got a longer bolt. Easier, but not as much fun!
I have also used a 3 jaw bearing puller in the past. Will this work on these motors?

I'm going to be having my brother install the UDP I just got for Christmas. I had a few questions and wanted to do a little leg work for him.

I assume I will need a smaller belt - where and what one should I get?

What are the torque settings for the crank pulley?

Anything else that is important I should know?

New belt & new Bolt:

Belt: Gates belt # K060747
Bolt: ARP 234-2503 (or GM bolt 12557840 would also work)

You are getting to be quite the G8 guru SteveO. :)

Bolt torque for the ARP bolt is about 230 Ft lbs as I recall. Do not reuse factory bolt, its a TTY. If you use GM bolt you must use new one and tighten in TTY manner (pain in the ass). Get the ARP bolt.

wreck, I thought the TTY bolts were torqued down to a small value and then turned down a specific number of degrees (145 degrees?)?

what is "TTY"?

They are. That's why he said the ARP bolt is torqued to 230ft-lbs, they aren't TTY.

Torque-To-Yield.

They are a "one time use" bolt. They stretch.

Man I am getting old. I thought the ARP (TTY) bolt was put on after the UDP was fully seated on the crank and TQ'd to 25 lbs or so, then turned an additional 145 degrees?

ARP is reusable, GM is not.

I typed that fast and didn't check what I typed.

That should say that ARP bolts areN'T TTY bolts.

Sorry for any confusion.

Ahh. That was my confusion.

Yes, the new stock bolt is torqued to 35 ft lbs, then 140 degrees. This is after the old bolt is torqued to 240 ft lbs, then removed.
The install is typically done with a longer bolt, about 3/4 in longer, as the stock bolt is not long enough to pull the pulley onto the crank.
Have fun.:)

Is there a vender that that has a UDP kit that includes the pulley, ARP bolt and belt? Looking to adding this and would like to 1. Support a forum vender and 2. Make it a one stop shopping experience.

Call Livernois. They should have them.

I used the stock bolt too. Tech used the old bolt to get the pulley on, then took it out and used the new bolt.

I just ordered the new bolt from Pontiac and special ordered the belt from schucks. 60 bucks total.

What's the install time on the UDP? Never installed one, so I'll probably have the guy doing my header install, slap the UDP on while I'm there. I just need a specific time frame, so I can estimate labor costs. Thanks

BTW... are there instructions that come along with it?

No instructions... Maybe 15-30 minutes from start to finish but you have to have the right puller and the right bolt to suck it up onto the crank.

Just remember that the seal that's on the stocker DOESN'T go onto the UDP.

Not sure if the installer has the right "puller". Prodyno.com. (Charles Hendrickson of PinksAllOut fame) Hopefully Charles has the necessary equipment..... I'll have my local guy do it otherwise. He doesn't have the most time on these engines as others might, so hopefully I can get Charles to knock this out in a few hours or more. Keep you guys updated!

Book labor from GM is 1 1/2 hours.

I'm not counting putting on a hoist or ramps.

I mean once you start it's pretty easy if you have all the tools.

OK so maybe an hour. There are short cuts.

You see about 5hp on a dyno but the ET's are even a better indicator.

Mike at New Era led the way with it.
