View Full Version : Rolling Fenders? Please Help!

Quite a few people have mentioned having their fenders rolled. I need some help, questions answered, and pictures please.

I went to someone who's opinion I trust this morning to look at rolling my fenders. He felt the lip and explained to me that the metal is double thickness, welded together at the lip. He said that traditional rolling with a radius arm (or something like that) would not work because of the double thickness. If you do it the traditional way it will probably mess up the look on the outside of the fender, make waves, or something similar.

So my questions are:
Those who did roll their fenders, how exactly was it done?
Did you have any of the inner metal trimmed?
Any deforming of the outer fender?

What would be REALLY useful would be some pics with the wheels off and some very specific instructions of how the rolling was done.

Please help me! I want to get my new wheels on!

I used the Eastwood fender roller I've used on all cars. I think that and a heat gun are the best tools for the job.

Speedware isn't very good with returning e-mails and phone calls.
Haven't spoken to them, so I am going on the assumption that they don't want my money.
Will try once calling once more.

You can also trim the inner section where there is a clearance issue with a dremel, and then hit it up with some touch up paint after so there is not a bare edge. I have done this with a few GTO's in the past and it worked out very well.

Yes, both Jesse and myself have used Haurys. Very good guys. My total out the door for the fender rolls and to touch up the cracked paint on the inside surface was $185. Very reasonable.

I finally got a hold of Speedware. They seemed to really be one it and they have done a G8 fender roll before so they know exactly what they are up against. I set up an appointment with them for next Tuesday morning.
We will decide once we put the wheels on whether we are going to trim, or roll.
I also need a helmet for 24 Hours of Lemons next month so they can help me out there as well.

LeMons, It is a 24 hour endurance race in sub 500 dollar cars. It looks like a very good time. Let us know how it is.

i had a guy that does the 240sx drift cars....he told me to cut out the bracket that holds the lower portion of the bumper to the quarter panel. He did a great job with the roll too.

I have never heard of that in sub $500 cars. Sounds like it would be very interesting/funny sort of way.

I agree but in all reallity its not a 500 car as by the time you do a cage, tires, wheels, seat, harnesses, ect you will be well over 5K I would think.

Safety equiptment doesn't count towards the $500. I don't even want to think about how much my buddy who owns the thing has in it!

I can't believe how much I am spending just in personal safety equiptment!

I went a different route with my GXP. I had the rear fenders professionally trimmed (actually removed completely) to accmodate the 285's. No matter what... you always run the risk of cracked paint with fender-rolling.

I hope you didnt cut off where they are spot welded... in most cars the quarter panel is 2 pieces that are folded over than welded (on the "lip" that you would roll or cut) my friends supra was cut off at after awhile the quarter panel actually came loose.

Trimming isn't a bad idea if you're sure the tires aren't going to rub. But, if you trim the fender lip, and your tires still rub, you may end up cutting your tire.

I have "half moons" now; I'm comfortable with that. The work was professionally done.. i.e. the edges were sanded and smoothed like glass. The exposed edge was also coated with protectant to seal the bare metal.

I have done several cars using the baseball bat technique. When It comes to the 8 I will probably do the same.
