View Full Version : Cam + bolt-ons vs. blower

Initially it looked to me that doing a cam swap + exhaust and CAI would be a cost effective solution to increasing power in this car. As I start to add it all up, I am realizing that we're talking at least $4000 in parts alone. With the KB blower being developed with a target cost of $6k, as well as the ATI or Maggie, the cam approach seems to provide less bang-for-the-buck (and more work to do it all as well).

Thoughts?

I think the cam approach is safer but in the end, if you go non-DOD, it's pricier. If you fast and cheap nitrous is the order of the day.

If it were my own car I would do a magnacharger first, then add cam later if it wasn't enough as a maggie wouldn't add much to the labor cost down the road. For 6500 installed/tuned w/ oil change, coolant, and plugs on a maggie it makes more dollar per horsepower sense then a cam change. plus with the maggie you can still buy a powertrain warranty for 200 bucks to cover anything GM wont.

Both are great options. Remember the blower will make more TQ which is a little harder on the trans and diff. Some blower systems should have the fuel system upgraded for maximum engine life. I like a fast N/A car that runs with the power adder cars and if I need more there is always "juice"

and there are currently pretty much zero options for upgrading these items....

not true not true :D . We have worked with Rossler on upgrading the 6L80e with some great success so far... We have a customer's car that makes 730 RWHP with zero issues

First i've heard. No mention of 6L80s on their site either.

I realize, so far it's exclusive through us. It's in developmental stages right now, we are trying to break it after his initial upgrades to see where the failing point is next.

Please keep us informed. it's my belief that trans upgrades will be needed very soon for lots of folks.

I don't know, we have made over 600 reliably with a stock transmission. I think alot of the issues are tune and converter related...

I don't disagree but I think longevity with higher HP will be the issue.

Yes we have a hand full of vette's making over 550 to the wheel on our mustang dyno 2 of them where tuned some where else and the lost there stock trans in less then 1000 miles , We put new stock unit's in and have logged 13k between the 2 of them with no issues and plenty of mid 10 second passes .

On to the original post

In my G8 right now is

Maggie , Cam + full bolt-on's , Meth injection and a little NOS , Still waiting on injectors , BTW to those with maggie's or thinking about one you will need injectors on even a stock car [ untill then include them.]

I was wondering about that. Even though they are 39s I thought they should be bigger.

the car that makes 651 rwhp went 10.70 in and out of the throttle w/ a 450+ lb driver. With the normal driver it goes 10.20's or faster on the street...

Obviously I don't know his exact weight, but he's a big dude. I weigh 270 and he dwarfs me pretty good. when I used to say he weighed about 350 people told me I wasn't even close

I thought Magnacharger included bigger injectors in the "kit".

Going back and reading through the posts about the Magnacharger Kit on the other board, BlownChevy the correspondent from Magnuson said that 63lbs injectors were included in the kit

Andy@Livernois

IIRC the kit is available in "tuner" status, and full status. I will get ahole of magnacharger after the weekend to verify. But I was told they come w/ the 63lb/hr injector earlier this year.

a 450 lb driver????

Hey Wreck that 450 lb driver only has 13 lbs on me and I
fit quite nicely in my G8. :auto:

Of course up until a few weeks ago I thought I was only 370
until I went to a Weight Watchers meeting with a young lady
I know and found out my sneakers weight 67 lbs. Naturally I
was shocked and joined right away.

:bpress:

I'm a little taller than that driver though at 6' 7".

So if I get under 300 lbs I can take a 1/2 second of my 1/4 mile time.

Good Deal!!

OMG! Hmmm, weight loss program vs performance gain. How much HP per LB?

General rule of thumb was everything else being equal, take 100lbs off the car, pick up a tenth.

I don't remember which mag it was back in the 80's, but they took a Caddy and started taking parts off. They got to the point where they were torching the roof and quarters off. lol

At the end they had the floorpan, a drivers seat and the dash. Took a second or two off the 1/4.

That was HOT ROD magazine , and that is pretty much the rule 100lbs = 1/10

Time to start training the wife to drag race. She has driven stock cars....We'll see how she does in a straight line! I'd drop about 125lbs so a tenth and a half off ;)

Sorry, just a tenth + 1/4.
