I'm only sending my first wheel and shifter to USA right now, so I have no feedback yet on the fitment. They are the only sports steering wheels Holden make for the VE range. They are identical to those sold on the only website I know of, that specialises in Holden to Pontiac type gear.

Maybe someone else on this site who has already fitted one and can chime in ?

It looks like the controls section of the wheel is separate, so you would retain the OEM Pontiac control sections and just replace the outer.

Of course could be completely wrong. It's been known to happen (just ask me ex-wife)

A few more pics.
I had a question today about the 2 items colour matching each other.
Here's a few pics taken in different light conditions.
They're close, I think the different leather textures might be a part of any difference.

If you have this type of steering wheel, with these type of controls......then the new Holden Sports Leather steering wheel will work.

You need to re-use the following 5 Pontiac parts on your new Holden Sports Leather steering wheel.

If you have this steering wheel then the controls, and spokes are different and will not work with the new Holden wheel.

I've been asked if the steering wheel is too thick.

The leather wheel is shaped and countoured in a variety of ways. At the back where your fingers would go in a 10 to 2 zone there is a flat surface.
These are the best measurements I can come up with.
Compare these to what you are used to and prefer.

h has been measured as you would measure the length of the arrowhead on a clock hour hand, as it sweeps around.

d has been measured at 90 degrees to measurement h
(the thickness of the clock arrowhead as it sweeps around)

I have gone over the directions many many times and rather trying to take a good guess I figured I would just ask. All I am looking to do is remove the silver plastic trim so I can paint it. Is it possible to remove the plastic trim without taking the wheel off? It appears there are only two screws and they are just under the airbag. Technically, if there is enough play in the wires, I would not even need to disconnect the airbag electrical connections??

It looks to me as if you need to remove the "black plastic hub" off the back of the wheel so that;
You can unscrew the 6 screws holding the switches from the rear, so that;
You can get the silver plastic trim out from underneath the switches.

To get the "black plastic hub" off it looks like you need to remove the Airbag and the Steering Wheel off the steering column.

[I've been told it takes 20 min to do the full job as per the instructions.]
I've been told that it's not really necessary to remove the upper and lower steering column covers, so that will save you a minute or two.

Crazy Paul

Here's a big pic.

I don't see how you can get the silver trim bits out from under the switches without loosening the 6 switch screws which are on the rear of the wheel under the black plastic hub.

I just replaced the steering wheel and have a couple pieces of advice for anyone who is going to do this mod.

The instructions Crazy Paul provided a link for are spot on, however I had a hell of a time getting the lower steering column off and on. Someone suggested that the mod can be done without removing the steering column trim covers. If you can access the aperture holes on the back of the steering wheel without removing them I highly suggest taking that route. This way you eliminate the risk of breaking the very fragile tabs that hold the plastic trim piece on.

When I had both wheels off and was swapping the steering wheel controls I overtightened one of the screws and cracked the silver plastic piece that receives the screw. The result is a slightly loose piece of silver trim on the steering wheel. It is hardly noticeable, but I know its messed up so it bugs me.

The hardest parts of this process for me were removing the steering wheel airbag module and replacing the lower steering column trim piece. The airbag module just took a lot more finagling then I thought it would, the column trim piece is just a cheap plastic piece of shit that breaks too easily.

I hope this advice helps anyone who is doing this, as I wish I would have known it before hand.

I want to do this swap, but I want a Holden Lion on the airbag instead of the Pontiac Logo. Do I need to buy a whole airbag as well? Is it possible just to change the logo?
Help?

Crazy Paul
05-05-2009, 01:54 AM
The correct way to go about it is to replace the Pontiac airbag assembly with the Holden airbag assembly.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/796.jpg

or replace it with the HSV airbag assembly.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/ve20air20bag20hsv.jpg

Both are easy enough to buy and can be purchased for less than US$225 ea from suppliers in Australia.
The PROBLEM comes when you try and freight an airbag assembly into USA.
All the freight companies I contacted would not transport an "active" airbag by sea or air. The item is classed as "explosive".

Apparently to change just the logo you need to completely dis-assemble the Pontiac airbag and drill out or remove fasteners from the rear of the cover.
Then you would need to source a Holden or HSV airbag logo with intact pins and fasteners (you normally cannot buy just this thru Holden) to attach to the Airbag Cover and re-assemble the Airbag assembly.

Yes I believe new radio controls are required.
I don't know if the shroud at the back of the wheel is the same between plastic wheel and all the other wheels. You could find out by comparing part numbers, try Greg for that. (I dont have info on the plastic wheel here).

I think Paul's wheel and the GXP wheel are slightly different. They are the same shape and the red inserts are the same but the left and right sections that you grab are more textured on the Aus wheel vs the GXP. At least that's what I've noticed looking at pictures of the GXP wheel and comparing it to mine.

Get a grip on reality.
The price from Holden hasn't changed in 12 months.
The US$ has lost at least 20% in value against the AUD since June 2010.
AUD reached a record 27yr high against the US$ in October 2010 and is still above that now.
Airfreight prices have risen and there's also now a new security surcharge on everything over 1lb entering USA.

1 USD = 0.985507 AUD

Gone are the days when $1USD used to buy $1.40 or more AUD. It's below parity now.
