Is it an optical illusion, or are the fenders and quarters flared more than usual?

They do look to be flared more than usual.
Teams protested about repair costs after races, and were granted approval to run cheaper to produce non-metal panels in certain zones where impact damage is common. Fenders would be a definate non-metal item now.

Do you have any way of finding out? OR at least what size they are running on the rear of the vehicle?

So Front and Rear 11's? That front end is definitely wider then. Wonder if they found the extra room in the back by moving the frame rails or if its from quarter extension/flares as well

Yes F&R 11" wide.
Those cars share nothing mechanically or dimensionally in common with a VE or G8 road car.

Thanks. I was not sure if they were production cars with cage added, similar to Grand Am cup racing, "NASCAR"-esque "stock cars" that shared nothing with the cars they emulate, or somewhere in between. Thanks Paul
