View Full Version : Tale of the Monster G8

Yesterday evening I brought my G8 over to a friend of mine’s garage to use his lift to install my Corsa CB exhaust. As I was pulling the parts out of my trunk Richard (my friend) comes over to me and starts telling me about Bob (another guy I know) and how Bob got a G8 into the 9’s. I was totally amazed and a bit skeptical because Richard was telling me Bob said the car made 1100 HP at the wheels I was asking Richard more and more about the car, but he didn’t know and his response was “Ask Bob about the car, he’s coming over soon”.

Well I’d finally got the stock exhaust off the car and was getting around to installing the Corsa when Bob walks into the shop. I stop for a moment, greet Bob and proceed to ask about this monster G8. Well bob proceeds to tell me that he actually never had seen the car, the only thing he did was build the engine that was placed in the car. Apparently Bob was asked to built up an LS7 engine (which he did) and sent the motor to another shop that apparently installed it into a G8 with a Procharger.

This is the first I’ve heard about any G8 with that much power and was wondering if anyone knows about this car?

BTW, both Richard and Bob really liked the sound of the Corsa. Richard was a bit skeptical about an exhaust system that cost that much, but he said it was worth the money.

I've read posts about a 9 second G8, I think it was on one of the Camaro boards.

No real info...

I have heard tale of a built LS7 with a F1R running 9s.

Cool, so there's probably some truth to this tale.

Bob was telling me some other stuff about the place he sent the engine to, some names and what he'd done to the engine, but to be quite honest I wasn't paying as much attention as I normally would be. I was deep into getting the Corsa exhaust system aligned correctly. Next time I see him I'll get more info.

Ahh, I love these stories!

My brother in law told me of a tale last summer of a G8 that had a custom built race 427 with nitrous, custom Boyd Coddington wheels, and side exhaust. He saw it at a transmission shop around here when it was getting a beefed up tranny due to blowing the stock one. He even took some terrible picks of it on his iphone (none of the engine) and they were low enough quality that I couldn't make out any distinguishing qualities for the rest of the car.

Well, three months later I find out that the owner of the car posts here (or "there", can't remember). It doesn't have a 427 and it wasn't at the shop for a new custom tranny. It was there for a rear gear swap. And those custom Boyd Coddington wheels? They were Breytons.

My BIL is known for being full of shit so I knew his story couldn't be true. It was just nice to have proof of it this time.

Funny how the tall tales seem to get taller with time. When I purchased my G8, I told them I did not want the extended warranty because I would be putting a Maggie on it. Now, each time I stop by to show the manager my latest mods (he's a neighbor), I get asked -by salesmen I do not even know- how the 550 hp, 11 second G8 is running ???!! I swear I have never perpetuated these rumours. I just nod, though. Why squash a GR8888 rumour like this.

Some big fish stories are found to be true sometimes.

The owner must not use computers if true. Or I think a little bragging would be found.

Before his current setup I know that he did at one time get at least 28mpg. I took a pic of the reading when he met me in Spartanburg last fall.

30 is hard... might be possible if I slow down to 55 or so. I get 25-26 with significant mods (no DoD) cruising at 70'ish.

I regularly average 20.5 mpg with mixed city/highway driving and have averaged a best of 28.7mpg on the highway while on a 300 mile roadtrip. The car achieves this quite regularly when on the highway so it wasn't a fluke. Verified with manual mpg calculations too. BTW, this mpg was achieved after I installed the TT's and with DoD turned off in the tune.
