Just got back from the Police Chief's Winter Conference in St. Augustine. GM was debuting their new 9C1 Caprice. You may or may not know that the Caprice is based on the Sport Ute platform that was to be the G8ST. What I noticed on this car was the fact that there was a transmission dipstick installed on this one. The rep said that the transmission on the demo car was a 4 speed but the production model will have the 6 speed. The literature backs up the 6 speed information. So, with that said, if the 6 speed is the 6l80 tranny we have and it HAS a dipstick, we may have one available to retrofit. Here are a couple pics...

I just don't see it having one, but if it does you will know where to find it.

Lets hope. If you get em I wanna be at the top of the list (right behind Wreck)! If I hear anything further I will post it up.
That is good news if it is true. Love the picture of the engine, I kinda forgot what it looked like stock.

This would be nice. A simple little part would have saved me hours under my car. I'll be waiting and :watch:

Didn't someone retro fit one to their G8, while the engine was out?

I doubt GM will put a dipstick on the new police car as GM believes that once the transmission is built and since it is built in a clean room there is no need to open it up unless due to failure.

And the Titantic had enough life boats.

We'll have to see what happens. We can only hope they will.

How did I know you would find this thread????
I'll say the obvious. The 4 speed has a dip stick. The 6 does not. Does anyone really think the new car with the same 6speed will have one?

Maybe it will be a police requirement because some departments maintain their own cars - don't they?
I hope so.

This was something I was going to reference but didn't want the argument one way or another. But, yes the cars are going to be 24-7 and fleet service personnel will want a way in which to check the fluid rapidly. Not to mention changing the fluid. When you have literally hundreds in a fleet, I think that having an easy way to check the tranny would certainly be a consideration.
Time will tell.

And, being a GM, there will definitely be failure especially being used in a police cruiser environment.

Greg, I'd also like to be put on the waiting list for the "factory" light bar, siren, and spot light. Thanks.
Just kidding.

When there is an actual dip stick, will someone please change the title to I got a dip stick for my 6L80?
Then I'll read this thread again. LOL

Well, the latest update on the transmission dipstick, from GM, is that they are not going to install one on the 6l80 as installed in the new Caprice.

The V6, five speed AT has no dipstick either.

The trucks get them and someone on the board installed it and it fit w/o modification. Of course the engine and/or trans need to be removed to get it in :) I bought one and tried to come up with a good way to get it in there but to no avail.

I'm pretty sure Greg@Pace has the numbers for what you need. Dipstick, tube, and seal.

Does anyone know if the modification can be done to the 5 spd AT in the V6?
