View Full Version : Engine Cover Question

Do the majority of you keep your engine cover on or have you removed it? My opinion is that it was designed for cosmetic purposes and noise reduction. However, I think it also holds a significant amount of heat. I was considering removing it to allow more heat to dissipate and increase engine noise. What do you guys think?

Everything you said is right, so you are safe to go ahead and take it off.

I took both off and replaced them with GTO covers and ground of the GTO and put some of the Holden racing emblems on them. I hated tooking at the coils.
This is before the emblems went on

Mine was removed within 10 minutes of getting home with the car. Within an hour I had the intake plenum cover and foam removed as well.

You have to pull the injector rail off. Or pull it up out of the way. I pulled mine when I had my intake off.

Had mine off (big easily removed cover) for like a day.

I experienced a LOT more engine noise. So much so, that I put it back on, and it's been on ever since.

I like things that are supposed to be quiet, quiet. Things that are supposed to be loud, loud. This car is backwards when it comes to that! It has to be the quietest Pontiac exhaust I've EVER heard (cheap little Sunbirds have a throatier exhaust).

Anyway....too much mechanical engine noise for me. And now that the country is in the ICE-BOX, it's like a nice warm comforter for my engine!

When you cut the center out of the engine cover, the side covers stay on without any additional attachment(s)? Do they move around at all?

Rick Maddux

Yes, the more I look at yours, the more I think it looks better this way than it would being painted metalic red. What does it take please?

EcoBrick Bob

My stock cover that has center removed is painted with Krylon Fusion Black. Gave it a crackle like finish. Reason for cutting the covers in 1/2... cracked it when I stood cover up against house and the wind knocked it over. We cut it apart with a sharp utility knife.
Emblems are from Crazy Paul. Completed - summer of 2008.

Thinking of doing the same, if I cut out the center I was wondering if it ok to cut out the intake runner plastic shield and foam underneath. What would be the negatives to doing this? Just louder intake noise? Would the intake charge be hotter like the foam was insulating against engine heat or cooler without the foam holding in the heat?

krylon fusion will work for plastic (if you can find the color that you want) if not you can use a plastic adhesion promoter the automotive paint

^^^ very sharp looking ^^^

I think the cover should be left in place in case of a heater hose or radiator hose bursting and soaking the ignition coils and such (perhaps shorting them out and ruining them in the process..... This is the reason I leave mine on (and did the same in my previous car).

The heater hoses are underneath the cover, so if one bursts I don't think it would protect the coils much.

RockyMtG8GT
10-02-2011, 08:31 PM
See, I'm so new I don't even know the basics like where the heater hoses are.... in my previous car (BMW 540) the radiator neck/connection to the top radiator hose was a known weak spot and when they blew, coolant would spray all over the engine bay. I guess this is what I had in mind when stating that I think the cover should be left in place. I have been tempted to remove that engine cover and now my G8 GT engine cover but when I visualize coolant spraying all over, I tend to think this cover will protect the coils and other electronic gadgets. Maybe I'm dead wrong...... but I have to say it looks pretty sharp (especially when painted nicely).
I removed mine yesterday and it is quite dusty/dirty under there...... ugly compared to you guys here with sparkly clean engine bays. I just wiped down the cover and put it back on, looks much tidier in my not-so-sparkly clean engine bay.

I like some of the modded covers.

But, am I the only one with valvetrain/injector noise?

The factory cover REALLY quiets things down.

SO much so that my Wife asked the other day what that noise is....(I had taken the cover off while looking around under the hood over the weekend)

So, is everyone hard of hearing and cant hear the valvetrain/injector noises, or is there something wrong with my car?

I took off the intake cover, and for the engine cover, I used a razor blade to cut "holes" in the sound deadening (not in the plastic of the cover itself). I didn't remove it all because I thought doing so might affect the fitment, and also, a plastic-only cover might rattle. This was actually the first mod I did, waaay back when I got the car.
