*********THE BELOW IS A DO AT YOUR OWN RISK, YOU ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY**********

Alright, there has been a number of people on here including myself that has offered AUX-In, VIP, other names, cables for sale. I'm going to show you guys how to make a perfect fitting, locking, professional set for about $8. Yeah, EIGHT DOLLARS. Think JHP is jacking up the price a little? Anyways lets begin.

First, where are we going to get these parts?

Most of the parts will come from the manufacture of the pieces....wait "That cant be cheap right?"

Its called a "sample". Go to http://www.tycoelectronics.com/default.aspx (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/default.aspx)

Here is a list of parts that you need.

Part Numbers in () and QTY in [], click part number for direct link to part
(963726-1 (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=963726-1&RQPN=963726-1)) Pins [5]
(2-1355524-3 (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=2-1355524-3&RQPN=2-1355524-3)) 12 Pin clips [1]
(1394048-1 (http://catalog.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=1394048-1&RQPN=1394048-1)) 12 Pin Holder [1]
(1-1355350-1 (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=1-1355350-1&RQPN=1-1355350-1)) 18 Pin Clip [1]
(1355348-1 (http://www.tycoelectronics.com/catalog/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&TCPN=1355348-1&RQPN=1355348-1)) 18 Pin Holder [1]

So there are the parts that you need from the site. How do you get those parts free without any cost to you? Easy, underneath the picture of the part there is a button in the center called "request a sample". Hit that.

OK so now you have one in your cart. "But I need 5 pins" OK well change the QTY of the pins to 5 and hit enter. It will update your cart. Once you have everything in your cart proceed to checkout. Fairly straight forward process. Your not going to get a lot of crap mail or phone calls or anything. They will just send you your stuff in a few days. It comes from Germany so it might be a week before you see it but it will show.

Next thing we need is come standard RCA input cables. You can find them at radio shack for $4 (CLICK ME!! (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103367#)) That link <---- is a picture of what you want to get from radio shack, or if you have some lying around those will work as well. For the radio shack one you will cut off the male end and strip the wires on both cables. Be careful with the ground wires as they are thin and will tear off. You will have three pins for these cables. One on each of the white input wires and another on the ground wires. You need to twist the grounds together and place one pin on them to have a single ground. The video cable will only use a single cable so you will have an extra cable for if you mess up. Same thing here, strip the wire and be careful with the ground. Place a clip on each wire here. You should be out of clips and have two sets on cables now. One two wire and another three wire. Kinda like this, minus the clips. http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv254/micheal0484/DSCN0284.jpg

Once you get all of the parts in you can start the assembly.

***NOTE: The pins need to be clamped pretty tightly to make sure they stay put, but dont damage the pins. ***

This drawing, http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv254/micheal0484/DSC03405.jpg, is what you need to follow. You see at the bottom where ever it shows what plugs go to the audio and video? Thats what you need to do. The clips are numbered 1-6 and 7-12 for the small clip and 1-9 10-18 for the big clip. You simply put your pin on the in the right hole, now most of us should be familiar with this............ OK on the audio you want to put the two input pins in the 5th & 11th slot. You will look over the 12 pin holder and you will see a 1 on one corner and a 6 on the other, likewise you will see a 7 and a 12. When looking at the back of the pin holder 5 & 11 are the last column of slots to the right. The ground goes into the 6th slot. The top right(looking at the back of the pin). You simply push the pins into the holder and you will feel a slight click into place. They only go in one way.

Now to the Video clip, simple here. Locate the numbers on the clip again. and put your pin into the slot again........OK thats enough. From the document you can see that the input goes into 14 and the ground goes into slot 5. Just follow the same steps and you will make it there.

Now that we are there you can slide the pin holders into the pin clips. They go in one way and should be pretty easy to understand. Then you should have something like the above picture.

The assembly process is well documented HERE (http://forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=9696). Just follow that and you should be set with Locking, professional cables for your G8 at the price of $8.

EDIT: Be sure you enable Rear Aux through the radio menu. You will not get anything without this.

Good Luck

That's badass and a big thank-you for posting the links and info! All parts free and shipped free!!! :woohoo: Heck even if I don't use the video capability, it's still a nice project to add for the winter. Again thanks for the time and effort put into adding the info!

The reason for the Free Samples is to generate future orders. What do you think is going to happen when Tyco starts seeing the same requests for the same free samples over and over?

I've seen it happen before that the manufacturer withdraws a free sample offer when it starts being abused.

If you can't afford the (what? $20 at the outside?) to actually pay for the parts you need, then by all means take advantage of the offer.

I'm just saying...

There is another set of pins that are a little bigger. I'll get the P/N later. As for if they quit giving samples then I guess you'll have to buy them elsewhere. This is a current option. Nothing more.

I believe he has used "hacked" the GM Can system? I understand how it works but by no means could I "modify it" there is only one input on the head unit that call out "low speed GMLAN Data" im sure this connection is what receives the signal that the car is in motion??

fyi,

both the socket contact and ABDECKKAPPE 12P are out of stock. I selected "i can wait" and used my work address so they think I'm legit. I'll see how long it takes and maybe I'll just buy them if it's going to be a while.

I wonder why JHP is charging 15 bucks for the connector for the amp. It looks simliar to these and they cost ~$1. Can we get that connector JHP is trying to sell from here as well?

I have ordered my "samples" from the vendor and everything was available but the pins, of course, they said 3-11 they should be ready.

So we know that the ordering system works but don't see as much in the thread about how the cables actually worked. How many people have actually built the connector, installed it and would claim success? I am pumped about the project I would just love to see some posts of users who its worked well for. youtube video, pictures and so on...

There is a cheaper place to get the RCA ends for use in this build up. Monoprice.com
I have used them several times in the past with nothing but the best results.

You can pick up the single male RCA into 2 female for $.55 each. You cut the male end off anyway Right?
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021803&p_id=663&seq=1&format=2

Or like the post shows 3.5mm into 2 female RCA for $.65 each
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=666&seq=1&format=2

It would be great if they had a composite cable with female RCA on both ends. You could cut it in half and make 2 full sets and the ends would be the correct color that way also.

Thanks for the great post its this kind of thing that makes me love the G8 community. Keep up the good work.

monoprice is great. I use them for all my HDMI cable needs and for fitting my basement with Cat-6 cable. However, it would cost you more in shipping to get just this than to get it from the Shack.

Once I get my pins in, I plan to build this thing and see how I can get it working.

will do. monoprice kinda screwed me a little. I ended up spending like $8 at radioshack for the cables (which is still a lot better than what JHP wants). I suppose if i did it right, i would have ordered the composite hookups when I bought my other cables from them a few weeks ago.

All in the fun of a project build.

Ya, I have to say that I am very disappointed in MonoPrice; they have never had an issue like this before. I am calling BS on there server maintenance being down for 1-2 weeks. I work in IT and if my site was down for 1-2 hours I would have a Vice President standing behind me asking when it was going to be back up. It seems like maybe they are having supplier issues and just don’t want to admit it.

Either way I am pumped about the project too even if I have to pay a little more for the connectors.

I am working on a Media Center setup that will have 110v power inverter, remote, be able to play videos, TV shows, movies, music, and picture slideshows all from an SD card, thumb drive, or external hard drive. And best of all it will all fit in the top portion of the glove box. I will post pictures of the build once I have it done and working....if my parts would ever get here. Did they arrive via USPS or UPS??

Interesting. Quote from their website:

A few of our customers recently reported to us that information from credit cards they used on the Monoprice website had been misused. We promptly began an investigation with the help of expert computer forensic investigators to determine if any card data had been stolen from our computers.

To date, the investigators have found no evidence that card information has been stolen from Monoprice’s computer network. As a precaution to ensure that our customers’ information is not at risk, we have taken our website offline temporarily while we and our investigators complete the audit of our computer network.

We want to ensure that there is no security vulnerability in any part of our computer network system. We notified local and federal law enforcement agencies, our credit card processing business partners, and all credit card companies that some of our customers reported concerns regarding their card information to us.

We also advised these entities that we are working with outside security specialists to determine if there was breach of our computer system. We will post additional information when it is available. We regret any inconvenience that our investigation and the temporary suspension of the Monoprice website may have caused you. Thank you so much for your great support.

I had the other parts besides the ones I got from Germany laying around so the whole thing was free, in a way. The parts I got from Tyco were to easy to hook together. Making the cables took about 1/2 hour (I only have a hair dryer for the shrink rap). If you have any questions let me no. I am still holding off on the VIM from JHP to see if someone comes out with something cheaper. I Hope so.

Well I attempted this last night and its really not to bad once you get the idea, but better directions could have helped, I tried documenting my progress with pictures with the hopes that it would help others, but my errors quickly made this a bad idea.

I'm posting this despite the humiliation I feel so that I may help someone else. I will start my post by exclaiming to all "I am a moron".

1st. I got 7 pins, lost 1 in my living room and ruined 3. I can still make it work but i'm kinda pissed. I'm kinda hoping radioshak has these.

secondly, I didn't know if you're supposed to clamp the pins to rubber wire insulation, or just the copper insides, but the rubber seemed more logical.

thirdly, i taped up the pins not realizing they had to sit all the way inside the connectors, so i had to untape them. They only go in 1 way, and this way changes depending on the top or bottom of the connector. Wish I knew that b/c I tried forcing it in, only to realize I had to turn it upside down for the bottom connection.

forthly (haha) i found the clips very stubborn when inserting them into the larger connector pieces. I had to push (very hard) to get it to click in.

Finally,

I am a moron and bought an 1/8" instead of 1/4" audio extension cable by accident and after finishing the project realized I had the wrong cable, so i wasted $4 and will have to try again with a hacked up video connection (because I couldn't get the inner connection box back out again (see me forcing the bitch in). Although I felt better today when i went into the shack and realized what i bought was put in the wrong spot and i must just grabbed it on accident. There's no returning cables you've cut into, haha.

I finished building my Audio / Video cables a few weeks ago and got them installed...they work great. I would make one recommendation based on my experience. I purchased a set of higher end composite cables to use for this project. I figured the thicker shielding would cut down on interference from the other components in the car. That was a mistake. I am not sure it was a benefit in terms of interference but it sure was a pain in the butt to get those wires positioned in the plugs with the extra shielding. I would recommend going with a standard run of the mill cable your life will be easier

The JHP cables are $47 if you buy the $300 VIM module.

If you just want VIP and a fat wallet the JHP cables are $87

I havent found the connectors locally. They are very specific and I think from the source might be the only way to go. I have been busy lately and havent been on the board much but if I find anything I will let you guys know. Im glad I could help, thanks for the other advise from the other users and hopefully we can continue to provide other options for the G8.

the pins are out of stock again, but available for purchase from avnet express. there appear to be some alternate parts that the only different is the gauge wire it can take, a little bigger, so i went that route.

and for those with concerns on the sampling program, i work for a company with a similar sample program, and the opportunity to get new customers far outweighs the "cost" of supplying free parts to hobbyists. usually we are too busy to even watch. we just dont want competitors to get them. once a part of our jumped two the second most sampled part in the division and we didnt know why. googled to find it was recommended by a hobbyist site to get 2 free samples from us and build an FM radio with it. we thought it was cool. didn't even consider stopping the program.

thanks for this write up OP.

Michael, can you edit your first post to let everyone know you have to enable the Rear Aux from the Menu screen on the radio to make this work?

I didn't realize it was an option to turn the Rear Aux on & off and wasted a few hours connecting/reconnecting wires. :(

you can use any of the recommended alternatives. in my investigation, the main difference is the gauge of wire it holds. if it is a little bigger, you just crimp a little tighter.
for instance, i used 963729-1. worked just fine.

thanks brady for the diagram, but i don;t think that contains the video/audio input sockets does it? i might be confused looking at it.

I guess I must be the only guy interested in this, but I like single-cable functionality. Meaning, I just ordered my connectors and pins from Tyco, did some SuperSleuthing for iPod cable pinouts, and one way or the other (if I can find the aux pinouts on the back of the HU or not) I am going to splice a full iPod cable into these plugs to xmit video, audio, and power (some trickery is involved in making the Touch think it is connected properly to a valid charging source) but I really think the single cable solution will be quite elegant. I don't plan on using any other sources, so I can do this :) LMKWYT...

For charging you'll need to connect to a different source than the two 12VAC outlets in the G8. The ground on them is crap, and there is a very nasty ground loop when power is connected to your AV device. The path of least resistance to install a third 12VAC outlet behind the center console or in some other location that is properly grounded to the frame or grounding block to eliminate the unacceptable whine. As long as your not charging on a source, and using quality AV connections, you shouldn't have any interference.

Seattle, I am talking about pulling power and using either a small inline dc-dc transformer or a simple resistor circuit, but using the iPod pinout tricks to fool the Touch into thinking it's plugged into a normal charging device like a dock so that it still operates properly.

I tried and failed this weekend. I couldn't get the pins to stay on tight after crimping, the wire kept pulling back out and now I need new pins. I suck at electrical stuff like this, are you supposed to sauter them on or something. I also am really leaning toward wanting the autoswitching back up camera as well. So am I correct in assuming these cables would not work anyway with the backup camera? What is the best option right now for buying a set of cables that would work with the backup camera? JHP seems expensive and also, is there a module that needs to be plugged in to the OBD port to make the caemra autoswitch?

CHECK THIS OUT!! Anybody seen or used this? Crazy Paul what's your take on ASL? I emailed them to see shipping cost to the States, this says line-level inputs AND charging for all iP*** stuff, but conspicuously does not specify VIP or VIM at all. I asked about that as well. The conversion comes out to about $74 plus shipping, but this might be just because I'm lazy. I've got the Tyco connectors and a spare iPod cable sitting here in front of me, maybe I'll take everything to work and assemble it there. LMK what people think, this is exactly what I was visualizing as long as it will send video as well.

not sure that it is much more than adding the two power line (12v and GND) to what we re doing. if anybody could ID those pins on this thread we could do that.

it says you can control the volume, but so can we. what will be the next best thing will be when you can control the song (FF, REW, etc) and see the output on the screen.

I just bought the cables from djchubbs on here which I believe you can just make using the info in this thread, but either way you get the cables that allow you tap into the rear aux and it's audio and video. Then I bought the apple brand composite cables that have red, white, and yellow outputs for audio and video. It also has a USB plug on it for charging and I wired that into the center console cigarette lighter and I bought a cigarette lighter adapter that has two usb inputs on it and I plugged it into that. I have perfect video and audio out from my iphone that charges perfectly and I have no alternator whine with it. Total cost for me was $95, but that included buying the cables from djchubbs. If you're willing to build them yourself, then it will cost about 2/3 of that. The apple cords cost $50, but they are well worth it because I tried some cheaper cables from ebay and I got really bad alternator whine and it would pop up with messages every minute or two that said this accessory is not compatible with this device.

ok, so i just bought my G8 GT yesterday, and theres two things that are a must, ipod input and a back up camera. it seems that these two areas have already been addressed. my question is this, with the parts from tyco, can u use my ipod apple cable instead of the RCA's and view video and hear music? the charging would be nice, but not super important. and another thing, if the speed controller kicks in, does it just blank out the screen? or does it disable the rear aux?

hartigan85
12-11-2010, 10:20 AM
To connect the Ipod the the rear aux you will have to have VIP cables, you will also need to buy the Ipod audio video cables. They have a connector that goes into the Ipod on one end and the other is RCA's, It will not charge the ipod either. When you go over 3 mph the screen will go black, you will still hear audio though. While you are parked you will have the rear aux screen showing, it will not show the ipod screen unless you have an Ipod dock connected to the rear aux.

Found a place to purchase the components if the samples dont work. Onlinecomponents.com You have to place a $20 minimum plus $7 shipping. I figured it costs about $7 for enough components to do both cables. Got the last connector in the mail. I know the first post uses component cables for the rear aux cable but what do I need to make audio and video work with my iphone 4?

Im almost done gathering parts to install my cables. One question though. I want to have my cables ran from the back of the HU to my center console and I want to have RCA plugins mounted on the inside of my center console. Should I just get 6'-8' RCA cables, cut off the female ends, and connect them to the connectors? I would then buy some RCA "bulkhead" or "chassis mount" jacks which are female-female like IndyPete and mount those in my center console. This way I could plug in my iphone component cable directly into the center console and everything would be hidden. Would this work? Am I on the right track? Im pretty dumb when it comes to electronics.

Something like this cable: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2110472&filterName=Category

^ I believe that my cable is 6' that runs into my console. I have moved mine since then. I plug my iphone into the apple cord that is in the cubby next to cig lighter. There is a hole right above the cubby where the cable will slide right thru.

Finally getting around to doing this. Does anyone have more info of which locations the pins go in the connectors? The pictures on the first post look pretty confusing. Maybe just a little explaining of where to install the pins would help. haha

Thanks for the writeup. Tyco sent samples of all the parts except for 2-1355524-3.

They won't tell me the shipping cost until after the order is placed and as I'm international that could be high.

I'll try to source them locally if possible if there is no alternative

You don't have your location in your profile so I didn't know that. Search in your area.

Sorry, I've updated my profile to reflect my location. Hopefully these are a pretty standard part

You can find them on eBay UK, if that's cheaper for you.

If someone wants to make an extra Vim cable, I would be more than interested in one.

I have one but it's not sealed great you would have to seal it to isolate a very dim squeal

Well I tried to order a set off Ebay but 2gtsvette
just scammed me for $50. When I emailed him asking about my item I got no response. The following day I emailed him again and threaten to report him to eBay and PayPal so then I get a reply about how the mail lost the last three he sent out and he doesn't have the parts to make me a new one until a week or two later. I said no send me a refund. I explained if he had emailed me back the first time I would be more understanding. So he does refund the money and process to bash me saying I was the rudest G8 owner ever because I gave him negative feedback. I was never sent a taking number and was ignored my first nice attempt. Just a warning for anyone here wanting to buy one from this guy don't waste your time just make your own.....
