View Full Version : Gas mileage with DOD delete

There seems to be alot of HP to be had with a cam swap to DOD delete setup. One of the reasons beyond insurance was the G8 GT got decent gas mileage. I get around 20 city, and 30 highway with my simple mods. With a cam DOD, how bad would the gas mileage go? Any ideas? I drive almost never on the highway, all back country roads and commute to work is abut 25 miles each way so I'd hate to drop to say 12 or 14mpg.

honestly, since ive had my new cam setup gas mileage has been worse..but simply because more hp=use more gas..but when i do drive lite-footed, i can get up 25-27 hwy mpg and in the city its hard to get much than 12-14 with the all the stop and go i have to put up with..def not bad for having over 500hp at the crank. :)

I don't think you will see much of a difference in your wallet. That's where it really counts!

I want to know how you guys are getting such good gas mileage. I have the mods listed below and do 90% highway driving and I get about 20mpg over the life of the tank. It's Indiana and not like I've got major mountains I'm climbing. I set the cruise at 70-73 and don't turn it off until I get off the highway and make the 2 mile back road drive to the office. I try to get the best mileage I can but cannot seem to do much better than that. I did notice I seem to get better mileage using 7-11 or Speedway gas stations.

Any thoughts?

I've noticed with other cars I've had, the cheapy no name gas like citgo and gates gave me less gas mileage and in one incident, water in my tank which gave me a bit of a headache. I usually stick with shell 93 octane, it's about .08 more than say sheetz, but my G8 seems to like it better.

My commute is similar to yours with backroads and no highways. I get around 15-17 on average. It really depends how much you stay out of the pedal.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'll be LUCKY to average 22-23 over the tank (usually get 20), with a pretty balanced mix of city/highway driving. Heck, I don't think I've ever seen over 23 MPG, and this is without getting on the gas hardly at all.

Sounds like I'm not the only one... maybe people are not looking at the overall mpg per tank and just resetting it once they get to cruising? Either way getting the same mileage I got with the truck I replaced, but doing it in much better style! :)

I don't see a tune in that list. you might be running rich.

On a recent trip back from Indianapolis, over 186 miles I averaged 72MPH and got 26MPG. So it can be done. I'm not easy on my throttle at all and I average 16-18 MPG in town and 24-26 hwy with an overall tank avg of 22MPG. Some of you might want to look into your tunes.

how do you average 22 mpg on a tank???my tune is fine and I can not get close to that...i can get good highway but city is terribly with the torque converter....

My AFM is off and my average is 22. I have gotten over 24 on the highway at 75+. And I know it's running rich!

I drove from Charlotte to Atlanta last week, occasionally on cruise, sometimes not, and I kept 29.7 the entire way down pacing traffic at 75-85 mph. On the way back, speeds were much lower, traffic stopped sometimes, hauling ass at others and my mileage dropped to only 27.3. Fuel quality, altitude, air quality all play part in it, as does tires (pressure and width). I also suspect that some cams are are better than others at mileage. I noticed MANOSTEEL69 and I have the saem camshaft and we both seem to get better mileage than most. Granted, I hat ethe cam as far as power in concerned in my engine, but it does get great mileage.

You're correct sir... no tune here. Really wanting to get one but a wedding in July and some other bills are keeping me from getting one right now!

I usually average 18-19 a tank with my car. On the highway at 70mph I can average 23.5 but the average drops fast as soon as I pull off the highway. I don't see how anyone could get 30mpg on the highway in a G8 unless it's downhill on a 55mph road.

I average about 18mpg on a tank. 21.5mpg on the highway with the cruise set at 80mph.

No tune yet as I'm still adding some mods....

yeah yeah yeah, well i can do that too:nah:
it's just the average after driving all city is never above 15... maybe im running or my shift points are too late..or holding gears to long..

I'm not calling bullshit, but for most of us 30mpg is obviously something the G8 will never see. And 20mpg city? If I do real city driving (traffic, stoplights, etc.) I see about 14-15mpg. On the highway if I reset the trip meter when I'm already at speed, yeah I can get like 25mpg but that's not over the life of the tank. I mean come on if the EPA rates it at 24mpg highway I don't think anyone should expect to see much more than that.

Ya know when you say you're not calling bullshit....You really are. I personally don't give a rats ass who believes what people get for mileage. If you think the EPA rates are what a car truly gets on the highway you are sadly mistaken. A car that is tuned to drive....and not meet EPA standards will 9 out of 10 times see an increase in mileage. Hell I used to avg. closer to 30MPG HWY, 22MPG City before my cam, and about 26MPG overall. I didn't reset my trip meter either "at speed" either. If I had my avg speed would have been closer to 80MPH. :nah:

Just because you cannot do it doesn't mean that we cannot. Numerous things play into it. Air, density, humidity, elevation, fuel, etc. The most important thing is the driver. The EPA puts it under controlled lab conditions at specific speeds to test for mileage. I get way better mileage at 74-78 than I do at any other speed. Another major thing is your tune. I have several witnesses on this board as to how accurate my mileage is. EDMANET saw that even after letting my car idle, through 2 start ups, and my mileage was still 26+. My mileage is one of the few things that has kept me from changing the camshaft I have. I personally believe dumping the DOD is one of the best things one can do to help mileage. Almost every mod so far has helped mine.

Maybe he should just get our cam and a tune and see for himself.
Oh, here's another one, ut it was a little shaky since I was driving:

I'm not discounting that some of you guys get these good numbers on the highway and such...........I'm just saying that other people shouldn't take them out of context and be like "Omg my car only gets 25mpg highway what's wrong???????"

Most of these responses are posed towards the guy on the first page who said his was poor, or the next guy who asked how we get the good numbers. Of course the original reason behind the thread was to find out whether or not the OP would lose mileage with a non DOD set-up; we're showing that that isn't true in all cases.

Your exactly right my car has better power and also uses more gas with it but my highway mileage has been up to almost 28. It's just the city driving I do sucks. There's a light every 500 feet!!! That's why! I am willing to check out my tune and check to make it's not running to rich and a few other things..

When you guys talk of a tune fixing the problem, make sure you specify a DYNO tune. The mail order tune will not help.

I was under the impression that is a given. IMO mail order tunes aren't worth the postage paid to receive them.

Although many VMS customers have reported mileage increases 1-3MPGs overall.

My mileage dropped since I reflashed with the 93 VMS tune, but I think its the snow and cold temps.
