View Full Version : Drag Radial / Wheel Question - REARS

I have read a lot of threads....and really don't understand this.
I want to get a set of Drag Radials, either the 17"x8" GTO wheels (+42 Offset) or the 17"x9.5" Vette replica wheels (+54 Offset).
Both will need centering rings from what I have read....but both fit good.
My question is, how the heck are people getting a 275/40/17 to fit on the 17"x8" GTO wheel? When I read up on the 275/40/17 DR's, they say 9-10" wheel for fitment, and best fitment at 9.5".
Is it safe in your opinion to run the 275/40/17 on the GTO 17x8 wheel? That is the cheaper option, and I like the look better as they look closer to the stock wheels.
Also, do all the DR's in 275/40/17 fit these GTO wheels, or just a select few?
Thanks,
Ryan

Different drag radials have different measurements, even if they claim the same size. As a general rule of thumb Mickey thompsons run larger than Nitto's. BFG falls in between the two. A 275 should not be installed on any wheel narrower than 8.5", but it can be, and all to often is done. Most of the time no one runs into any issue with it though. The 8" wheel cause the sidewalls to be pulled in too sharply for a flawless seating of the bead. The 9.5 would be the better choice for that tire. A 265 is the ideal size for an 8" wheel

The more I have read up on this, the more I have seen that a lot of people are running the 275/40/17 DR's on 17x8 wheels.

That's why there is a difference between
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE,
WHAT COULD BE DONE,
WHAT WOULD BE DONE.
SHOULD: The manufacturers specs should be followed, like always. They are put there for a reason.
COULD: Yes the tire can physically fit a smaller rim, it can also be blown up to fit an 11",
WOULD: People will do what they want to do, regardless of what they are told or advised lol they also have a tendency to do the Easiest and Cheapest ways first.
At least thats what I've noticed

I am thinking of purchasing these wheels (price is for a set of four) and either sell the two i dont need or keep them as a back up or something. (probably sell for like $200 shipped). that would bring the cost to $100 a rim which isnt awful. Im also thinking of mounting this tire on them. Together, should be pretty sweet and wont completely break the bank.

the wheels would work(with the appropriate hub ring). The tires however, are gonna be a bit large if your car is lowered at all. The width is pushing it, whereas the height is hitting the body of the car (with weight int the car)

If I stick with DRs I was thinking about these http://www.mandhtires.com/store.php?crn=70&rn=294&action=show_detail
I currently have 275/45r 17(26" tall) those M&H are 28" tall

That is the exact setup I'm using on mine tire and wheel size wise. Only difference is my 17x9.5 wheel is ZO6 style. My G8 is lowered with Eibachs and they fit about as tightly as Rosie O'donnel in skinny jeans. But unlike that visual, no rubbing as of yet. See Signature video of setup in action.

no sir. I DO NOT have rolled fenders either. Maybe it's magic. I would not feel comfortable daily driving it on them though.

My car isnt lowered and I never intend on doing so. As well, these will only go on once Im at the track and then back off once fun time is over. I think it will work pretty well and is about as large as you can go without some major rear end modifications.
Thanks for the video! What are your 60's? Are you still pretty traction limited or is there more left for the tires? How much do you think the stage 3 drag setup from pedders would help?

Interesting....the options are growing. I was kinda hoping it was limited, now I have too many choices.

The sidewall width on those is 11.6, my ET Streets are 11.1 and I have lots of room left. My car is slammed. I don't know about the height.

Yes, I'll be there. Just trying to decide what time to leave the house. KLooks like about a 2.5hr drive. I guess 5:30ish...
Does the T&T end at noon or does it continue along side the racing?

Maybe not magic per se, but definitely all the right tolerances in the right places

If you aren't going to drive on them or lower the car, then you could get away with it. When people ask me if something "works" I take into account bumpy roads, fully loaded suspensions, hard cornering, aggressive driving, multiple passengers, etc. Basically everything for normal everyday driving situations. As a track only tire, its fine

Not trying to be a smart ass but you might want to ask Charlie about the 28 inch DRs. He's about to make the switch[I think] and hinted that the black plastic inner liner might need to be trimmed and the fenders rolled. ??????

Not to mention a 28" tire may actually slow you down... happens to a lot of people that go bigger on tire size without going up in power and gearing. I've seen cars go slower stepping up in tire size with double the HP these G8's are pushing, 28" is a lot of tire to turn!
Just something to keep in mind.

It depends on many factors. G8s are a work in progress.
Mike at New Era and Matt at Tune Time both run/ran 28" M&H tires.
All we ever ran on our L/SA Olds was 9x30 slicks. We tried stepping down to a 28, but the car slowed down. 380hp (flywheel), 4.88 rear, Turbo350...
The gearing was matched to the tire height perfectly and changing one would have required changing the other.
But you don't know until you try.
;)
I do agree that going up too much on a mostly stock G8 will probably hurt the ET. You are giving up the gearing advantage these cars have.

For the time being, but the area the tire touches, or comes close to, is not dependent upon ride height, just wheel diameter. Like on Nates car, it may clear on some but not on all. It will not fit on mine

I plan on taking some measurements with my current to check clearances before I order.
