Who's your carrier?

My father just got one last week. He's a verizon customer. He wanted the iphone (ATT) but didn't want to switch carriers. Not as many apps, I'll talk to him more about it and see what he says.

The Droid has FREE Navigation, and all of the apps are free. This is new to the market, so more apps will follow. One down side is it does not have have the touch screen that allows you to zoom in with two fingers as the iPhone does.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9YGvLHvUxQ

Video with side by side comparison of the Droid and iPhone. 3G Coverage by Verizon is just about everywhere, where for AT&T, you need to be in a big city, DFW, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, etc. If you live out in the boons, the AT&T uses the other technology called Edge which is not 3G.

I thought the whole unit felt cheap, and the keyboard felt like it was built out of recycled egg cartons. I wish someone would come up with a well designed and built Android phone, but the Motorola isn't it.

I was so hyped and then so disappointed with the Storm. Even with the 5.0 download, which is way better, it manages to piss me off at least once a day. Its a shame the Droid can't play flash (Storm has same drawback) but it might be worth it just for the 5mp camera and the DVD quality video camera. My Storm tells me it can't even play its own videos lol.

I played with this and the storm 2 and ended up picking te Droid for the android system which i felt was much faster and smoother. Didn't get to play with the Droid Eris by HTC but it also looked pretty good. I have fat fingers and the sliding QWERTY keyboard just takes some time to get used to.

Almost did.. but after playing with it and reading 200000 reviews I will probably go with a WinMo phone instead like the HTC Imagio or so.. as much as I WANTED to like the droid , like motorola phones and am a sucker for a qwerty keyboard there's just something about the droid that doesn't click with me.. not sure if it's Look/Feel of the phone, the OS, or what....

I bought mine first day it was available. I love it. The screen resolution and brightness is fantastic. The call quality is great. I have heard of some people having issue with phones that power themselves off. I have not seen this issue. The app selection covers the basic stuff, weather, sports, games and most are free. This is probably has close as you can get to an Iphone on the verison network. I am sure the selection will grow dramatically over the next year since several phone makers are releasing android phones. This is probably has close as you can get to an Iphone on the verison network.

the droid is cool but it will never catch up with the iphone..what mac or apple does is waits till a new phone drops see what consumers like about it and try a way to adapt it to a iphone..like navigation..the camera on the iphone is untouchable even at 3mp...they iphon eis not with the best provider but if it was to break free of ATT and get global with all provider this phone will be in everyone pocket...

i love my 3gs
i just dont love my phone bill!!!

LTE (Long-Term Evolution) is coming, maybe some cities by end of March '10. This would be consider as 4G for the devices. Then it will migrate to the other metropolitans around country. I don't know how they came up with the name, but it is what it is.

Played around with my wife's friend's HTC 'Droid Eris' phone over the weekend and I liked it quite a bit. My wife has had an iPhone for ~2 years while I've suffered through some basic Verizon razr / krazr style phones. I've been thinking I would make the switch soon to an iPhone, or at least wait until next year when the next gen comes out, but now I'm seriously thinking of going with the droid (HTC that is, not the new motorola). At least now I can stick with the better Verizon network.

I have the Motorola Droid. Got it the day it was released. Awesome phone, much better than the Droid Eris (AKA HTC Hero on Sprint). WAY nicer screen - higher resolution. MUCH faster processor. Physical keyboard. The Hero/Eris sucks. The Droid rules.

Compared to iPhone: Better network by FAR, much nicer screen - higher resolution. Same processor (spec-wise - 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 based - but with different manufacturers - Texas Instruments in the Droid and Samsung in the 3GS) as the 3GS. Physical keyboard. Multitasking. Open platform - no need for apps to be approved by Apple, and no need for jailbreaking. Google Voice for free text messages and other nifty features. Google Navigation. Lots more free applications, though fewer overall since Android is newer.

Like some of the others, I got it on release and love it. Maybe not love it, but like it a lot. There is some room for improvement and the phone will only get better with firmware updates(first one in a few weeks to fix the camera). Flash 10 is coming early 2010 so that will be great and more apps are added by the day. The Google Navigation is killer with the street view and it being free and all.

Rumor has it Apple may release their 4G(LTE) iPhone on Verizon sometime this summer, but take that with a grain of salt.

Every review? Which ones are those? Because the Moto Droid specs better in every single way. The Eris/Hero uses the same CPU that I had on my Sprint Mogul, which I got 2.5 years ago. The Moto Droid has 2.67x the amount of pixels that the Eris has. The Droid has both virtual and pysical keyboards. It looks better, too, because it doesn't have that huge section of uselessness at the bottom.

Only thing worse is the price.... But, hey, it's up to you.

It's easy to make something better than something when you have it to work off of... You can't dismiss the fact that the iPhone took phones to a completely different level and left others behind for a while. IMO the iPhone made the other phone manufacturers step up to the plate and make a better phone. It will always have that going for it. The 4th gen is in the works... Wait for it. Apple WILL NOT be left behind. Count on that.

4th Gen is scheduled to come up by end of 1st Quarter of the year coming, unless there are some delays, and I cannot release or be more specific, sorry. There are a few cities that will be coming up, with more to follow in the following months. I don't the schedule of cities, but if I do find out, I will share, but you did not hear that from me....

In 2011, there will be more cities or areas bringing 4G up as well.

I'd say get it

I have a G1....I thought by now I would be tired of it but with the open source software I'd think it was as customizable as a computer!

Not to mention the Navigation which is probably one of the best I'd ever seen...rooting the phone opens up all types of possibilities, and there is not 3 dyno apps on the market you can download.

I'd thought I would have upgraded to another phone by now but I am still with it. Cant say that about a lot of Iphone users...they have to scrap their phones to get the latests updates.

I got the $100 online discount then the extra $100 for a 2 year plan extension. Then got Verizon to throw in the Droid car mount for free! I also just got (forced) upgraded to the latest Blackberry 9630 for work, but I don't really like it. After a bit of 'discussion' with my boss, it looks like I'll be able to 'trade up' the blackberry for one of the 2-3 droids that our company will be evaluating for a few months.

I'm really looking forward to comparing the droid rev 1 to the droid rev 2. :secret:

Sorry, I guess this doesn't really align well with the discussion on this thread... I apologize.

In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of the Droid?

Pros: Way better camera
DVD Quality video recorder
Turn by Turn navigation
Loads Web pages at about 2.5x faster than a Storm
Better battery life.
Less dropped calls
Better speaker phone
Voice recognition for contacts, google search, and turn by turn nav. (even gets it right in my Semi)
A shit load of apps (Mostly all free)
A 16GB SD Card (upgradable to a 32GB), Storm is 8GB

Cons: Some apps don't flip with screen
Screen doesn't flip until you open keyboard
Keyboard takes a little getting used to (Android touch keyboard is the way to go)
Forwarding texts and messages is a pain (still haven't found an easier way)
No flash player capabilities (but Adobe is coming out with an App for this)
Cant play .wmp but neither can Storm and I doubt Microsoft will ever give that up.

No, he says that the iPhone sucks because you HAVE to hack it in order to use applications that Apple doesn't have to approve. (e.g. Google Voice, PDAnet, etc.) He's right, though there are plenty of other reasons why the iPhone sucks that I've already mentioned.

It'll be the same if you're comparing them on the same network and they're both using the same protocol (in the Droid's case, and currently the best on Verizon, that'll be 1xEV-DO Rev. A).

I just picked up the droid. If AT&T didn't suck so badly, I'd have gone with the iPhone. The iPhone is still the phone to beat, in my opinion.

This is a strong, strong runner-up though. I'm very pleased with it and I think it will even shock some die hard Apple fans I know.

Was probably going to go Blackberry before the droid came out, and that was only by default. Because working on WinMo phones (even the latest 6.5 release) is nothing short of nightmarish. I have to work with other people's WinMo phones on a daily basis, and it just feels like going back in time 2 years every time I do.

The most important aspect of a phone to me is touch response and over all responsiveness. Windows Mobile fails in that category, even on the HTC Touch Pro 2, at least to me. Blackberry is alright. The Droid is damn impressive, but still nothing beats the feel of the iPhone.

So far I recommend -

backgrounds
battery widget
mabilo ringtones
shazam
task panel

Task panel is so far my favorite task managing application. Tried 3 or so others.

Battery widget is also very helpful, you can view the percentage right on the home screen, and tap it to enable/disable WiFi/GPS/Blutooth instead of digging in the menus.

Did you get it? The battery seriously sucks on this phone. Make sure you have a car charger with you. And just to think MOTO underclocks the processor on this phone by 50mhz and the battery life is still horrible. Make sure you keep WIFI and BT off. Display brightness from auto to 0. Just some suggestions.

I got mine and my first impression is that it's a lot different that the Blackberrys. It was a steep learning curve but I've gotten used to it and I like it a lot now. The battery does run down really fast though. All I did was take it off the charger and drive to work and by the time I got to work it was down to 90%. I went and bought a second wall charger for work just to be safe.

The HTC Droid Eris has surprised me with how quickly the battery power plummets. I'm yet to have it ever run out of juice (not for a lack of trying), but I've had it get as low as 30% by the end of a day. I guess I'm just used to my old flip phone that could literally go days without charging.

Like someone already said, WiFi devours battery power. Only use it if you need to.

There are some good battery widgets that you can download that give you a more accurate power status (versus the little battery indicator). I've also disabled the tactile feedback on the virtual keyboard... if you do alot of typing, that will end up wasting alot of power as well.

Chewy
12-08-2009, 09:06 AM
Things I do to save power on my iPhone.

#1 reduce brightness to as low as you can stand. The iPhone automatically brightens and darkens in different light levels so that makes it nice.

#2 turn off WiFi

#3 turn off Bluetooth

#4 turn off 3G (it pulls more power)

I only do all these things when I have no power available.

However I have a couple of external batteries that work great when away from an outlet.

Of course they want to be #1, but it's going to take a lot of time and Verizon will have to start slacking off. I love competition, though AT&T is much worse as a company in general, anyway. They treat their customers worse. And Verizon isn't exactly stellar at that, either.

The battery life will improve a bit in a few days. Or maybe it's just the battery life METER that will improve - it could be underestimating it at first.

I played with a Droid and while it's very good, I wasn't compelled to ditch my ATT Fuze for a couple reasons. Tethering and a 5GB data limit. Your plan says unlimited but it's not. ATT isn't perfect but tethering is important to me. I'm sure they will find a way to cripple PDAnet when their own plans come out. It's like paying to use an Exchange server for email, too. WTF?

Well my Droid broke last night, the dumb thing has three hard buttons, the up and down on the rocker switch and the Power/Lock key and the Power/Lock key no longer works on mine. Ever since it had been new I had to hit it 3-4 times until it would lock which I knew wasn't right since my friends would lock the first time. Well last night I shut the phone off and when I went to click the power button I didn't even feel a click, luckily when you hook it up to a charger it turns on. But now I am having to slide the keyboard out every time I need to unlock it. Called Verizon this morning and they got a new Droid sent out to me and will be here on Thursday. Just hope none of you with it have the same problems.

I drained the battery in 4 hours by pretty much constantly fiddling with it.

Conversely, today I had unplugged it for work at 7 AM. I used it to talk on the phone for probably 30-40 minutes today, check weather a few times, check ESPN and some other websites. It's 11 PM right now, and it still says 30 % battery life.

Bluetooth disabled, GPS disabled, WiFi enabled.

I have no complaints.

Yeah that's more likely a Verizon network thing as there are still some backwoods places in WI that don't get any service. But it's basically BFE as you said, which is about 100 miles past the middle-of-nowhere.

I do not have bluetooth in my G8 but my understanding is the bluetooth works. However their are some quirks with the droid bluetooth that will not allow you to voice dial without activating voice dial on the screen of the phone.

FYI - Verizon has a sale on their Droid accessories right now if you put DROID35 in as your coupon code (www.verizonwireless.com). Makes the standard windshield mount and desktop cradle about $19 each. Also works for most of the chargers and other stuff they sell on there (though most are overpriced to begin with)
