Since I haven't been able to decide which CAI I want for my G8, I decided to make a DIY air silencer delete. I'm a fan of the un-modified look, so that was my motivation for this project. Here's how I did it:
The materials used were
- 90 degree mandrel bent 4" diameter aluminized steel pipe with 12" legs
- 4" ID hump coupler
- 4" to 3.5" 45 degree bent reducing coupler
- 3/8" barbed fitting
- hose clamps
- recycled hard plastic pcv line from when I installed my catch can
- paint
First thing I did was remove the air silencer and put in the couplers so I could see how to cut my pipe to length. After cutting it and making sure it fits, I drilled a hole and put in the barbed fitting. With the barbed fitting in it was ready for paint. I used some flat black header paint which I don't really think is needed for the amount of heat this pipe will see, but I like the finish you get with it. Here's how it looked once dry.

And with the couplers.

Now to get it in the car is slightly tricky because the 4" to 3.5" 45 degree bend coupler is a b***h to get on. Once you get it on the maf it gets easier. Once I got the pipe into the maf coupler I put the hump coupler all the way onto the other end and rotated it into position at the TB. From there it was easy to just slide the coupler down the pipe and onto the TB. Make your final adjustments with positioning and tighten the clamps. For the breather tube I didn't get a long enough piece of 3/8" hose because I'm cheap and tried to buy what I thought was the minimum amount I would need so I recycled my hard line from the PCV system. To attach to the barbed fittings I used couplers made out of my 3/8" hose. And that's all there is to it. Total cost was about $80 and it makes the car sound better. Here's some pics.
