Hi all,
I've been at it again. This time I've installed a rear back-up sensor that requires absolutely no drilling. It works off electromagnetic technology instead of the traditional ultrasonic technology which require the round ultrasonic sensors installed in the bumper. The kit came from Parking Dynamics http://parkingdynamics.co.uk/. Pretty easy install. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the hardest I give this one a 2. Even if you only have half a brain and use your wrench as a hammer, you would still be able to do this install. Ready? Let us begin...........But first understand that by using these instructions YOU assume all risks. I am not be responsible for any damage you may incur from this.

Here is what you get in the kit:

Step 1. Remove the rear bumper fascia. :surprise:

Now, now, it's VERY easy to do and here are the instructions

Now you'll have this

http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w338/DaMaine1/Reverse%20Sensor%20Install/Picture002.jpg

Scary isn't it! Just take care NOT to scratch it up.

Step 2. Clean the back of the bumper where the sensor tape will be mounted with isopropyl alcohol.

Step 3. Mount the sensor strip to the back side of the bumper. I used two strips to avoid reduced detection range due to the metal crash protection bar. This may not have been necessary but I didn't want to have to take the bumper off again if the range was bad.

Step 4. Run the wire that connects the sensor strips to the control unit through this grommet which leads to the area where the battery is located.

Step 5. Per the instructions strip the two wires, twist them together and crimp on the supplied male connector.

Step 6. Attach the wire to the sensor strips and re install the bumper.

http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w338/DaMaine1/Reverse%20Sensor%20Install/Picture015.jpg

Step 7. Now for the wiring. You can tap into the reverse sensor connector that every one uses for their AMP remote turn on feed. Use The L-GN wire for the + and the Black wire for the Ground.

http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w338/DaMaine1/MY%20GXP/ObjectSensor.jpg

I, on the lazy hand did NOT use this connection. Hey It's hot and I didn't feel like contorting myself to access it. so Instead I just tapped into the reverse light, again using L-GN for the + and Black for Ground.

http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w338/DaMaine1/Reverse%20Sensor%20Install/Picture017.jpg

Step 8. Mount the control box in a suitable location using the supplied double sided adhesive strip.

I mounted it on the metal just below the tail light hole. Sorry forgot to take a picture of that but you can see it above just below the wire. :dodge:

Step 9. Mount the supplied speaker and test. I mount the speaker on the metal just above the rear seat pass through. It isn't very loud so you may want to consider extending it's wires and getting it closer to the driver to hear it better.

http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w338/DaMaine1/Reverse%20Sensor%20Install/Picture018.jpg

The test!

You're done! You now have a pretty good back up sensor that did not require drilling the bumper or the ugly ultrasonic sensors to be installed. Just look at my rear! :butt:

BEFORE you ask, yes I have a back-up camera but it's hard to judge distances using the camera alone. The sensor helps with that and besides it's a new toy and I had nothing else to do. :D

Great job! but holy shit that looks like a lot of work! Any reason in particular you needed back-up sensors?

Nope! I like gadgets and need much therapy!

Thanks for the post. Since my wife, who is short, drives the G8, she is used to a backup sensor on her truck. I looked at this sensor but couldn't find any info on the range. Your video answered all my questions. Thanks again for a great post.

Well done. Clean install. Is there a sensitivity control to allow you adjust the distance before the constant tone?

That's great! Can you make the instruction pics larger? They are quite hard to read. :(

DaMaine1

GM Fan, there is no sensitivity control for this unit. I don't believe they have any that have adjustable sensitivity.

roSSco, here are the instructions in PDF form so you can print them out or save them to your computer.

How dangerous is step 5? Are these clips easily broken? Any tips?

Great writeup, thanks for the video too. I'm gonna get this for my car also. How much was the total cost with the extra strip and shipping?

Step 5 isn't that bad. The clips are actually the bumper itself. In other words there are oval holes drilled into the fascia. Just take your time. After the first couple release you will be able to slide your hand behind the fascia to aid the others in releasing by gently pushing up on them.

The cost is $111.62 for the rear audible only kit with $12.00 shipping. You do not need to order an additional antenna because the kit comes with two.

DaMaine1, just wondering after a week of use what's your overall view.

So far they work very well. The only gripe is the speaker's volume and by using the second antenna strip it may be too sensitive. I would suggest mounting a single strip in the middle of the bumper. The two strip systems picks up, believe it or not, rocks! I couldn't believe it. I was backing into my garage and got a steady tone as if something was in the way. Having kids I figured it was a toy or something so I got out to find a couple of lava rocks from our flower bed were in the driveway by the garage door. When I removed them, no more constant tone. I though "No Way" so I puled out, put the rocks back, and lo and behold the alert was back. How's that for sensitive?

Thanks for the update, good to know that it's working so well. This is definitely cleaner than having the ultrasonic sensor drilled into the bumper.

Good Job DaMaine1, I like this system and will probably get it.

I like this and will probably get this also. Decent price. With my 20% tint in the back and the high ass of this car, sensors at night would be nice when backing up.

Can you tell me what your rear view camera is and where you bought it? Did you do a thread for that also?

Thanks!

Good right up. Did you have to punch a hole through the grommet for power, or was the hole already there?

Hi,

The rear view camera I got is the Boyo VTL300C you can get them off Ebay for $60-$90 depending on where you shop. I did not do a DIY for that one but it's pretty simple to install. If you remove the trunk (boot) liner it will be pretty obvious how to run the wiring.

I punched a small hole through the grommet to feed the wire through. The grommet will seal around the wire to prevent any water leaks.

OK, so I found the camera. How did you do the install? Sorry for the questions. Nowhere on the BOYO company website does it explain how to make it work with our factory screen. Any pointers?
Thanks.

You can go the VIM route (good info here):
http://forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=1627

Or go the Rear Aux route, which disables after 2.5+ mph.

You can get the VIM (video in motion) kit from JHP or you can make your own video cable for the camera.
To make your own cable look here:

The pictures are still in the thread you just have to read further in to where they were re posted

I'll try to do a how to for you this weekend to better clarify for you.

Did Pontiac offer a rear camera as an option? I do like both the camera and the sensors. Avoids a lot of "skinned up bumpers" and worse. Good write up, thanks for the post. BTW, could you use the "alert sensors" on the front bumper as well?

DaMaine1

Pontiac did not offer a rear view camera.:jerkoff: I have JHP's VIM mod with auto reversing camera. I installed a license plate frame camera prior to installing the sensors. To answer your question the sensors can be used in the front as well. In fact the company where I got this particular unit has the front sensors as an additional option. The only problem with the front sensors is you have to turn them on and off manually because there is no way to trigger it on and off automatically.

I like that. Always interesting to park the car head on with the front end being low. Thanks for both the tips.
