View Full Version : Neighbor's cat

My next door neighbor has a couple of cats that like to hang out on my property. I have dogs and they usually chase the cat off, however one of them likes to lay on the top of my G8 at night.
So I've been thinking about ways to keep the neighbor's cat off of my car w/o hurting it. And the best (and cheapest) I've been able to come up w/ is putting a strip of duct tape sticky side up where the cat normally lays. The only issue I see with this is the cat somehow sticking itself to my car overnight.....
Any thoughts?
It's A G8!

Well you would have to do it every night. I dont think it will stop doing it. Just but a blanket so it wont scratch the paint.

Call animal control and have them capture the cat and take it away. Leash laws are for ANIMALS, not just dogs. People who let damned cats roam should lose them. I hate cats, especially when they climb on my cars.

Lol, unless you find a way of making the hood cool the cat is gonna lay on it. They love warm things to lay on.

Don't do this.^
Just spray it with a hose when you see it on there. It will most likely not do it again. Cats aren't as dumb as dogs and will usually avoid something like that.

Funny you should mention this. I have the exact same problem. Somebody recently told me there is a spray product at Pets Mart that will keep cats away. I haven't checked it out yet but I will report back when I do.

I have this issue but not on my car, I have pigeons and crows pooping all over by my pool making a mess. So my solution was to go to my gun shop a request a HUGE favorite from the master gunsmith!!
Attach a scope (an extra I had) attach it to a bb rifle I got a walmart and he calibrated it so it was really accurate bc if they were to sit on the railing I don't want to hit the railing. Its not like I killed them but its been two months and no birds at all!!! Its like touching a hot stove, you are not touching it again!

I have thought about the hose thing - but I would have to sit out there all night and wait for it... The cat is scared of me as I have been chasing it away, and it usually leaves when I come out front.
As far as animal control.... Unfortunately, in AZ they won't do anything as cats have been classified as 'free roaming' (state law) and therefore are entitled to roam as they delight. The have also started doing a catch and release on feral cats - where they catch it, sterilize it and release it back where they found it... Awesome huh...
If the cat does damage property you can take them to court for damages - but it's a he said/ she said kind of thing. This cat for some reason chewed my windshield washer nozzle and it had to be replaced. It's not available as a seperate part and has to be replaced as part of the arm assembly. Thankfully my dealer warrantied it.

Wait at night in between your neighbors property and your car. When the cat shows itself, one well placed .22 round will suffice. If noise is a concern, have a little cap gun also. .22's arent much louder than those and cap guns can be blamed on neighbor kids! Just my .02!
Whatever you do, do not startle the cat. The cat will extract its claws as it tries to get off of your car and scratch it. Trust me I learned my lesson a long time ago on this one. You need to get the cat to be afraid of you, and it needs to happen around your car to associate you with your car. Comes close to the car, spray it with water, throw a rock at it or just lungeand yell at it. For a small fee I can take care of the issue.:poof:

That would only work on a dog. I have seen many dogs eat or ingest shit that was just plain stupid, never seen a cat do that. Cats are picky eaters.
Find a way to catch the cat and not let your neighbors know. Then late at night take the cat with you outside(in the cage you caught it in) and put it behind behind your car. Proceed to rev the shit out of it so the cat gets the message. If you have exhaust, this helps. Then quickly release the cat before neighbors notice.

Sounds like a car cover might be a quick solution. I've sprayed cats with water, febreze, you name it...didn't keep the stupid cat away. Probably depends on the personality of the cat. I've found the more you try to keep it away, the harder it tries to get to it.
If it was me, I would approach the owner of the cat and ask them to keep the cat indoors at night. If they can't be reasoned with, and your local authority says they can't do anything, I'd shoot it. As far as I'm concerned, it's trespassing on private property.
Thankfully I have a garage so I'll never have to worry about it. Car cover is probably the simplest solution if water doesn't work.

Mines not (note avatar). Brings them home to play with! I have the same issue but with my own cats. They love to lay on the cars but usually the wife's. Mine is covered. I have caught them on it and when that occurs I remote start it or hit the alarm. They will jump off. Just a warning though, if you startle them too much they will accelerate their departure and use the claws! Cats are won't stay in (on) one place for too long. They get bored with it and will move on. If you stay on top of scaring them they will learn not to get on the car. FYI.

Don't use any liquid it will leave water spots and you will have to clean them off. BB, pellet and .22 caliber are risky as you might put a hole in your glass or worse. Snake might ne good, Florida is being overrun with Boa Constrictors and pythons, someone there could ship you one. All depends on how well you get along with your neighbor. Present him with a bill for buffing out the sratches. They will either get rid of the cat or hopefully move. Personally, I like the python idea. It gets rid of the cat and then you have some fine snake skin to make into some interesting items.

This is why in my 1st post I said find it before it gets to the car. No damage to the car from the .22 if its in the yard! But I do like the idea of giving the neighbor the bill for detailing seriously.

I hate stray animals. If you can't "take care of it" yourself-if you get my drift- have someone else get rid of the damn thing! I am having the same problem with one of my pot-head neighbors and if she doesn't keep that patchouli smelling thing inside it's going to disappear.

An airsoft gun will do the trick. Just try not to hit it in the face as that's kinda mean unless you are that type of person.
Airsoft gun will hurt the cat enough to make it weary of that place. You may have to do it twice. Airsoft guns also have a low chance of messing your paint up but that cat will most likely scratch your paint.

Try the remote start a few times. It shouldn't startle him enough for claws but it might get him off the car. You never know tho, it might become a vibrating bed to him then you got a whole other problem to worry about.

This is a good alternative. I don't condone killing any animal. The super soaker would probably do the trick. I do think, even though I suggested it, the paintball gun is overkill. Airsoft gun would not penetrate the skin but get the point across.

My parents use the frequency emitters. They work on cats, birds, and whatever else was tearing up stuff in the car shed at the farm. My parents can't hear it, but I can, and it's a little annoying, so if it's close/attached to the house, I'd only turn it on when the cat is typically on the car.
But the cars used to be covered in dirty cat prints ALL OVER the whole car. The way they jumped up and down from the car even made it look like they walked on the sides of the cars too. lol The emitter made pretty short work of that.

He use to get on the car but after I scared the s.. out of him he doesnt anymore. Neither does the wife's.

Well guys, thanks for all of the suggestions. Although I'm not a cat lover I'm not really interested in killing the cat, so the poison /.22 is out. I may look at the airsoft, and the ultrasonic noise maker. I've also done some researching and found that most cats don't like citronella or pepper spray so I could just try spraying some of that around the car and see if that helps.
I just think it's really wrong headed and inconsiderate that someone will not keep their pets in the house. I mean seriously, if my dogs start barking I bring them in. I don't let them shit on someone else's lawn...

Agreed! We have a neighbor couple that are deaf. They don't go to sleep till VERY late (midnight or so) and they leave their damn dog (daisy) out and she barks until they let her in. Literally for hours... Last winter when it was -?ºF she was out there barking away... I was a c hair away from reporting them or putting a piece of mail in their box. I give them a little slack as they ARE deaf... Their kids hear just fine though...

We always preferred cats to mice and rats. Mice like spark plug wire insulation and upholstery. A lot. My uncle found this out when he put his Cougar Eliminator in the barn several winters back - not pretty.

I tried those ultrasonic noise makers with my dogs, because they used to bark way too much and it said it was guaranteed to work. I set up 3 in my backyard, and they didn't do a damn bit of good. I seriously don't know if they were emmitting any type of sound whatsoever.

She does not go near it as long as her mortal enemy is on top.

I say use a paintball gun. Its safe for humans it should be safe for animals. When my doberman was a puppy there was this neighborhood dog that would attack my dog when I would take him out while I was housebreaking him, almost killed him once. Well one day I went out there with my very fast paintball gun and my puppy, when that dog came into my yard I lit that dogs ass up and problem solved that dog never came across the street again. Maybe for a cat I would turn down the fps to a safe setting since they have less body mass. Humans its around 275 fps maybe for a cat I would try 150 fps that is very conservative imo. On second thought DONT DO IT!!

+1.
Ever been hit by a paintball? Too large to go under fur/skin. Big enough to cause pain. Get a car cover to protect the car, get a paintball gun and tag that cat.
The problem with a cat on the car is not that you get fur on your paint. It is that dogs like to jump at cats, and dog claws leave big scratches! My GTO is scratched BIG TIME from this scenario. Since I would not be offended by someone putting a BB in my dogs if they were a problem, this is the route I took. Seemed to work.

Sprinkle some cayenne pepper (or any other hot pepper) flakes where the cat likes to hang out...worst that can happen is he'll sneeze his ass off, but he won't be back. I did it a few months ago on my porch and the cat hasn't been back...now he hangs out across the street.

Just noticed this thread.
We tried something similar to keep the two new cats off the counter at night.
We tried upsidedown medical tape and packing tape, thinking it would aggravate the cats.

You'll end up with duct tape stuck to your car...
