Also recommended...this made a HUGE difference to the interior of my car, feels so much more solid and comfortable to my arm at the same time--and the sliding feature is very useful.

Man, I want one of these. But $300 is a little more than I want to spend on an armrest. Adding it to my Christmas list...lol.

I know it seems pricey but it really makes a big difference! The standard console lid looks and feels like something that would come in an Aveo. This was one of the first mods I made on my car...

My wife's Saab has this feature. I do NOT like it. It is always moving forward or backward. Does the G8 one stay put or move around?? It looks like it is also covering the cup holders that get a fair amount of use in my car.

Thanks.

Aveo's have leather?

No, they don't. And the G8, even with the premium package, has a console lid that is cheap plastic, not leather. Run a fingernail across it if you don't believe me. IMHO, it stands out like a sore thumb.

It locks into place forward or back. It does cover up the cup holders in the forward position. I really don't care about the sliding part, probably because I'm fairly tall and it isn't in the right spot for my elbow when it's slid forward anyway.

Does this new lid get rid of any feature that the old lid had? I could swear when I first saw it I remember it did, but it might be that card/pen holder combo which isn't a big deal anyways...

I am 6'4" my seat is all the way back and the arm rest is in a perfect position for me. Good thing too, I don't think I could part ways with 300 bucks for an arm rest.

I'm 5'8" and having the ability to slide it forward would be nice, it also looks like its slightly higher than stock lid.

Next question-------with this "other"lid when it is open, does it just fall like the original or is there more pressure in the hinge that keeps it from doing this? That does annoy me. My Expedition's arm rest/bin cover will stay where it is placed.

It stays up but it dosen't have a locking pin. The weight is more to the back.

What I like is when it's slid forward you can't open it. When I go into a store I put my iPod in the cupholder and slide the lid forward....I guess I shouldn't have said that.

I didn't know Paul was selling them or I would have bought it from him.

Ahh, nuts. Do want, but $300? It'll take a while to convince myself to spend it.

Though my father's Honda does this, and it is seriously the first thing I checked on the G8 when I sat inside of it. I was sad it didn't have it from the get go... I use both arm rests in most cars, but find both G8's fairly uncomfortable. This would give me one to lean on. Damn yous Paul.

Seems like a lot, but still to me it's worth every dollar...feels 10x higher quality, is more solid, has an actual pleasant texture to it (my elbow was always "sticking" to the gooey rubber lid on the stock G8), it's a little firmer but still pliant (again, the old one that was squishy and thin wasn't great), and it is taller, just enough to be more comfortable and easier to rest on. I'm 6'-3" and just like it a lot more overall whether slid back & with a drink or slid forward with more to rest my arm on--it has detents so it doesn't just freely fall backwards & forwards, etc.

Again, not cheap, but a nice part and makes a huge improvement to the console and it actually now matches both the door panel material and the seats. I'm one of those who rate this higher than a CAI, for example, simply because my arm touches it and I see it everyday, so always in contact--and it made more of a change than a lot of things have.

So...recommending it, again. If you can afford it, get it. Otherwise, you're missing a nice piece that should have been in the car all along;)

You need to be looking for a weak AUD.
The AUD is at a 13 month high right now, which is bad for you.

Unfortunately it wont help.
The price from Holden for the part is the overwhelming majority of the total price. Freighting 10 to one house and then 9 out to other houses is no cheaper than sending 10 individually to the people direct.

Maybe if the AUD-US exchange rate drops way below 90c I can look at doing something. Not now tho.

I put mine in my car last week (been extremely busy lately), and man what an AMAZING improvement. This is absolutely how the car should have come from the factory.

I took a few pics of the process, which is ridiculously easy and fast, yet the instructions make it seem more complicated and confusing than it is. Once you see pics and a summary of what it is you're doing though, it's a piece of cake. I'll try to post a thread about it as soon as I have the time.

How about the switch and lamp for this lid that comes on the Holden? Bolt on to the US console or are the mount points not there?

The lamp and switch can fit into your US console......it has nothing to do with the console lid at all.
Part Numbers are in this thread.
Your car body harness may not have the pair of wires required to power the console light.

TurboMike
01-14-2010, 07:54 AM
Yeah running a wire is cake (for me anyway), but I probably wouldnt bother trying to engineer a switch and bulb assembly. I've already searched here and g8board and have seen the part numbers in that thread. The part number for the console switch cant be found in the US and is a different number from the switch for the glove box. Its a Holden part number. The bulb assembly part number has a new part number assigned to it which is the same as the glove box assembly, so I assume those are the same and can just order two glove box units and pop one into the console. I cant find any info anywhere that the switches are the same.

My plan was to get the glove box parts, and take apart the console and see if the glove box switch is the same and fits. If not, I give up having a light in there (getting a bulb or LED mounted is easy, having a switch that will work forever is not) and just have a glove light.

So I was thinking since I'm doing all this taking apart of the console, its a good time to think about the very expensive leather cover you sell. I was hoping you knew about the switch. Then I could just order the cover from you and double lights and switches from a GM parts site, or if that switch is different and a Holden part maybe you could get it and sell it to me with my console cover.

I was also reading how the cover on the bulb assembly is dark and doesnt let much light through, and one post said the trunk light is the same assembly with a clear cover. So now I need to reseach that and see what I can come up with while I wait for your answer from Australian time. :)

Crazy Paul

Glovebox and Console had the same lamp and switch part numbers up till 12/Nov/08. [92109218 & 90033510].

The switch for the glovebox had a part number change to 94580496, it's quite possible that the console switch part number has also changed.

Both parts are available shipped from Oz for less than total $20.

Sorry to jump on this thread at a later stage but I have recently purchased a Holden SS VE Ute and am disappointed with the crappy plastic armrest and am in need of a sliding leather version.

I have read the fitting instructions for the JHP Sliding Armrest and notice that the armrest needs to be opened 180 degress to a horizontal position to remove.

Now in a ute I believe this is impossible due to the limited room behind the seats.

Does anyone know if the factory armrest can still be removed and the JHP sliding armrest can be fitted to a Holden VE Ute??

Any help would be appreciated.

It's a Holden sliding armrest.
If a Holden Dealership can't tell you it's possible, then you may have to remove a larger section of the console and do the swap outside of the ute.

Someone asked for pics with the console lid in the both the default and forward positions, both open and closed, so here are pics. Just installed it tonight. Very easy, especially if you have the GM G8 repair manual on hand from Pace Performance. :)

Default Position - Closed
http://www.danielhower.com/g8/g838.jpg

Default Position - Opened
http://www.danielhower.com/g8/g839.jpg

Forwward Position - Closed
http://www.danielhower.com/g8/g840.jpg

Forward Position - Opened
http://www.danielhower.com/g8/g841.jpg

The console lid will NOT open in either the default or forward position unless you active the front lever. It is very snug when moving from the default to forward position and back again, so I doubt that it will ever get so loose that it slides back and forth on it's own.

EDIT: Okay so now that the console lid has settled in for a few days, I noticed that it will NOT open when in the forward position. Don't know why it did when I first installed it but noticed the change in behavior today.

You're welcome. A little slower than normal but still 14days. Hope you enjoy the new armrest.

Thanks Paul! This should have come with the car, it is sooooooo much nicer than the stock plastic armrest.
Shipping was faster than the atari gauges I ordered with 2nd day air...

10th December 2010.
More price rises from the supplier and freight supplier. Bad exchange rate does not help either.
New price US$415 total shipped by Airfreight.

Yeah, that's a tough one. Always one of those mods you want to do, but there's all this other crap to do too.

Maybe we could get 2 shipped to the same address here in STL and save a few bucks on shipping....

I think it might be cheaper to buy a round trip ticket to Australia and test drive a new Calais and claim someone stole the lid! ;)

The main thing to understand is that right now the US$ is on parity with the $AUD.
1:1 means your $US has no "purchasing power" when buying from Australia.
Trying to save $5 or $10 here or there by bulk buying or group purchase is more trouble than it's worth.
Look what happens to the price if the AUD drops to 75% of it's value against the greenback......US$415 suddenly becomes eg:US$311ish
Wait for that to happen. (75 to 80c is the long term average value).

Sorry Paul, I wasn't saying it is overpriced. It is what it is. I'd love to have one someday.

Paul is exactly right in regards the way our dollar has been going against the AUD. No more bargain shopping.
I do not see the AUD dropping against the dollar anytime soon.
Our dollar is pretty weak ..The biggest gainers recently have been Australian & Canadian $$.

As for the sliding leather counsel lid. This is well worth it.. great addition to the interior. The slider is a great addition to the soft leather lid. You can feel the difference when you arm rests on it.

Hey Paul is the lid any longer than the stock one? My mom is short and she complains about the arm rest being too far back since she has to have the seat moved really far forward.

On another note: We have seen much more interest from international buyers now that our dollar has lost it value so it does have it's good and bad sides.

Greg,
This unit isn't considerably longer, but because it slides forward, this would help a person that sits closer to the dash.

It fully covers your cup holders in the forward position, and slides back to emulate the position of the stock cover.

It is slightly taller than the stock cover as well, and a bit better padded.

Really matches the height of the door armrest.

Yes it would be ideal for the situation with your Mom.
Without deploying the slider the sliding leather armrest position is the same as the original armrest.
When you firmly push the padded part horizontally forward, you can set the new armrest position anywhere up to max 85mm forward of the stock position. Friction in the slider mechanism holds the armrest in place anywhere from 0 to 85mm forward of the stock position.

On another note: We have seen much more interest from international buyers now that our dollar has lost it value so it does have it's good and bad sides. Yes indeed, many a bed in Australia are becoming uncomfortable to sleep on due to the volume of US car parts jammed under them recently. The internet makes it easy for everyone to do their own Christmas and parts shopping from USA.

Expensive, but soooooo worth it! It puts the crappy plastic/rubber stock one to shame!
I would like to take a trip to Australia to buy a bunch of cool car parts, only problem would be getting them back home :(

Anyone what to sell me there stock lid? One of my hinges broke on my stock lid and I'd love to get a nice sliding lid, but $415 is a lot of money for a console lid.

Hey guys, looking for some info on how to remove the lid on the console of a maloo, been at it for 30 mins and nothing seems to work atm.
