View Full Version : Intake Bolt Options

Many of you are looking for intake bolt options for our weak factory bolts.

Getting the stainless knurled socket head ones to match the kits is almost impossible, so here is what I have found and I will know how many I can get in the morning.

Option 1. Stainless Hex Head (you will reuse your factory washers)

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm132/charlesvanwormer/BOLT.jpg

They will be $42.50 shipped for either option which is cheaper then the factory bolts.

If you have pre-paid for bolts and want one of these options, just PM me and tell me.

These bolts MUST be changed so you dont break 1 when changing intake or removing the intake cover.

Just post "I want" so I can see how many extras to order.

This cheap compared to the $350 it cost me to have a broken bolt removed from the head. And yes I was using an in lb torque wrench and the bolt never made it to 89in lbs. I'll be ordering a set when I do my ported manifold/tb.

$350??? Good lord! I was going to remove my intake cover this weekend, but I think I'll hold off for a while until I want to spend the money for new bolts.

If you use coil covers it doesnt matter. The SS hex head will almost look stock and you will remove the washer from the OE bolts as shown in the original post.

Just PP and I will ship when they come in.

I seriously would. Obviously lots of people have done it with no issues, but the bolts are known to be weak. Sucks if you're the one it breaks on. $40 is cheap.

Bolt snapped on mine two. Mine was very difficult to get out, almost had to pull the heads. Good investment if you plan to remove your intake cover.

Almost exact same story for me. Well worth the money. I will order a set too when I do my ported manifold/tb because at that time 1) everything will be off anyway and 2) I should have access enough to grab the broken bolt with my hand or a vice grip and break it again - oops, I mean - ease her out. :)

These are seperate. All the other bolts are allen head and these are hex head. They are both stainless though. All can be purchased for $100 shipped.

I have an allen head bolt kit for the coils, coil brackets and fuel rails. There are pics in the other bolt kit thread.

The factory bolts have unnecessary studs on the end and it really makes it look good especially if you dont use any type of engine covers.

I have already paid for the bolt kit but wondering about these bolts. Is there an ETA yet for the kit. What's the main hold up? Can I see a pic of these new bolts to see if I may just want to go that route if that is whats holding up the shipping?

I didnt forget you you are 1st on the list. These bolts look similar to the factory bolts only they are stainless. They should be here in a little while and I will take a pic for you.

The original socket head/allen head bolts are still not available for the intake. I have 100s of the ones for the rest of the engine.

I came up with a optional bolt as some people use engine covers and you cant see them. Not to mention I hate reading someone broke a bolt...again!

GRRRR8

I sent you all your bolts today with a set of these. The knurled/allen head bolts for the intake are on indefinite back order. If I do get a set I will swap them out with you.

In the meantime you can get rid of your intake cover and not worry about any bolts failing. :)

I can attest to the stock bolts being weak as well. I removed the beauty cover a few weeks ago so that I could use Pauls coil covers. All the stock bolts torqued back down like they were supposed to except for the drivers rear bolt. I could tell something was wrong when I was able to tighten almost a half turn past the first torque setting where the others stopped way before that. At that point I stopped torquing. I never got the click I was supposed to but I know if I keep going the head is going to snap off. I'm going on the assumption that it's fine for now but if I ever remove the intake to get it ported to do other work I'm concerned that that one could snap now when I try to remove it.

GRRRR8
09-22-2009, 05:47 AM
I dont even take a chance on them now. Every car I service get my bolts or new dealer bolts minimum. The dealer bolts just cost more and can still break the next time you are servicing.

09-22-2009, 09:21 PM
So the risk is when re-installing the bolts after whatever you've done, that they could break as you tighten to spec?

Gheeeeeeeeeeeeeey!

This sounds like a good deal then.

Hey Charlie, what advantage is there for the factory using '1 time use' bolts instead of say a standard grade 5 (or whatever is necessary)...? Besides selling lots of bolts?

Selling fasteners on every service ticket. There never use to be TTY bolts or any of this crap. Its just to make $$. No advantages.

So how likely are the stock bolts to break when you remove the intake cover? I actually have been holding off on swapping in my Roto-Fab intake cover just because you guys got me paranoid about these bolts breaking.

Also, are these just the however many number of bolts involved when you remove the cover? Are they easily replaced, or do you have to do some more invasive surgery to get to some of them?

GRRRR8
10-13-2009, 10:25 AM
Over 50% chance they will break. You only need to remove them if you remove the sound cover.

rez0nance

Over 50% chance they will break. You only need to remove them if you remove the sound cover.

So when I'm swapping in the Roto-Fab intake cover for the stock intake cover, it would be a good idea to have these in hand.

If they were to break, it would be when you were torquing them back down I imagine? I would just use these bolts in place of the ones I take out when I remove the stock cover? No need to take anything else apart to get to any bolts or anything like that? Reason I ask was this quote:

Bolt snapped on mine two. Mine was very difficult to get out, almost had to pull the heads. Good investment if you plan to remove your intake cover.

Here is a fast way to remove the factory washer.

Take a pair if needle nose (a wrench will work as well) and set on top of washer and smack pliers with hammer and it comes right off.
