View Full Version : Bluetooth install

I managed to locate a VCIM that has bluetooth (20783877). Antenna is coming. Dealership has agreed to do the install. I am assuming all they will need to do is swap the VCIM, cut the white wire, and do a flash of the VCIM to get the Onstar to work. Will the dealer automatically know what/how to flash?

Nope as stated in the thread on G8board unless its a brand new unit you are screwed (and even then there are issues). I'm beta testing the final fix for this right now whatever you do DO NOT let the dealer touch it they will muck it up further. The new programming also allows the unit to be plug and play, no wiring monkey business just like it should be.

So did I waste my money? Or will I be able to get it flashed later? I have installed this same unit in my 07 Sierra and it is plug and play with no programming as far as bluetooth is concerned. Of course Onstar does not work, but its not active anyway and I am not gonna ever renew in the truck. I have some Onstar left on the G8, so that is why I wanted it to work.

I'll have to do some digging but I believe thats one of the units I've worked with so in that case you are fine :) . If you want onstar to work wait just a little longer and let me unlock it, regreen it and program it (waiting on final reports from beta testers). They are one shot units normally once they are programmed to a VIN they are toast (at least on the onstar side) I've worked out a way around that and upgraded the programming as well so hold tight and we should both know this week if its good to go (when I tested it in house it was but you never know!)

Thanks GTPrix, I also have 25984444, which I have installed in the Sierra now. I believe this is the older version of the VCIM. If interested, you can see the pics and see what I did for the GM Truck forum:

Is there any OnStar/Bluetooth Modules that also have A2DP?

Yeah now I know why I remember that number there was an issue with some navigation features not working on the Denso nav units and that was the upgraded P/N with the fix so it should be fine :)

Is there any OnStar/Bluetooth Modules that also have A2DP?

I wish, but none that I've seen yet.

I may actually send both to you if that is okay (and I'm sure your gonna charge, lol, and if the price is reasonable) so that if I ever decide to trade or sell the truck, the new owner can get the Onstar working if they wish. I will wait to hear back from ya to get this going. Thanks again!!!!!!!!

I'll let everyone know hopefully later this week when the beta guys report, it's pretty time intensive on my end so we'll see what we come up with :)

Hopefully by November! I am going to see Charlie. Have sent him a list of mods (it keeps growing) electronically its the hacked gauges, bluetooth, glovebox light, homelink and auto dimming mirror. Plus some suspension work and the CAI. Keep up the fight GTPprix

I will begin working on 2008 shortly that will require some different programming to make that work but I'm realtively certain I can do it.

GTPprix,

Is this solution involve buying a used Onstar unit and reprogamming it or just reprograming the unit that came with the early 09's.

I can answer that, you will have to find one from a junk yard (used). The 08 and 09's (not including 09.5's) do not have bluetooth in the vcim (Onstar unit as you described).

Sent my units off to Chris (GTPprix) to have them reprogrammed. Just and FYI, if anyone is ever thinking of running their vehicle without the VCIM installed (your in the middle of the installation and get the urge to run to the store for a grape soda, etc.), don't do it. I tried that in my truck (07 Sierra) cuz I was too lazy to put the old VCIM back in last night and I got Brake, ABS, and Stablility lights on this morning when I went to work. The second trip got a Check Engine light as well. Put the old one back on, all the lights are gone except the Check Engine light. So I will probably have to go to the dealer and play dumb to get the Check Engine light removed. The truck ran fine however.

Update: The Check Engine light is off. Took about 4 or so trips, but it is gone now.

Does this happen on G8's, or just your '07 sierra?

I've had my onstar AND XM boxes completely removed out of my trunk for several months and have never gotten any CEL or other malfunctioning lights like you describe. ????

Could I make a suggestion to the Grrrr8 gods. Could we lock this thread, or create a subsection just for Bluetooth in the G8 and move all these related threads there. I'm not confused but I can see it confusing n00bs given that there is now a solution to the Bluetooth problem.

Chris, you have the VCIM's for sale? Will they work in a 2008 G8 GT after you reprogram them? Do you need to have an active Onstar account to use the 'new' bluetooth feature? I didn't renew my account because I think it's useless.

I've seen bluetooth modules listed on GM parts sites. When you try and order they call you or email you "thats a special order item for a dealer only". I've tried. Good luck. Maybe you can get one this way, I couldnt.

Executor999

I tried ordering from the GM distributor sites that were listed in previous posts, and the orders never went through. The feedback I got was the item is no longer available. I ended up picking one up on Ebay and overall the price was comparable since shipping from any GM distributor is bloated, so I don't feel like it was expensive.

Thanks. I have a watch going on on eBay and call some local recyling yards that specialize in newer cars every now and then. I'll keep looking, I'm patient.

I haven't been paying much attention the the boards lately and last time I looked into it (probably over a year ago) adding an 2009.5 Onstar/Bluetooth to an 2008 was a problem. I would like to replace my BlueStar unit with a reprogrammed 2009.5 Onstar box if I can.

2008 Pontiac G8 GT...and 2009.5 Bluetooth OnStar VCIM...

Are these currently available from GTP, his website is off for the week, do I have to source my own Onstar box? New or used?

You source a new or used unit we retrofit program it and ship it back to you. Hardest part of the whole process is finding the box!

Executor999

I just received my reprogrammed bluetooth OnStar module, courtesy of WAMS and it's awesome to have bluetooth in the car!

Some lessons learned for installing on a 2008 G8 GT:

Make sure to attach the bluetooth antennae to the back of the VCIM.
If the light on your rear view mirror is green upon ignition there's no reason to contact OnStar if you do NOT have an active account
To pair your bluetooth phone make sure to hit the call button on the right side of the steering wheel for two seconds, NOT the call button on the rear view mirror.
Say 'bluetooth'
When the car computer acknowledges your choice, then say 'pair'.
Follow the car computers instructions and make sure to have your phone ready to turn on the bluetooth.
Your phone should list the bluetooth device called 'General Motors'.
Be ready to memorize the four digit pin that is cited and punch it in your phone.

I went for a drive to do an errand which was perfect timing to get a call and test it out. The bluetooth worked flawlessly. I pushed the call button on the steering wheel to receive the call. The conversation was crystal clear! To end the call you just push the call button again.
