I have a lot to learn. After work, still dressed up business casual, I went to Island Dragway up here in Great Meadows, NJ. This was my first time ever to enter a dragway besides watchin videos.

So what do you get when you mix the following:

400 RWHP GXP M6
Island Dragway
Bridgestone Potenza Summer Street Tires
and a nervous newbie driver

=Terrible Runs!!!

First Run,
Regular Tire Pressure. Small burnout to warm up. For the launch, dropped the clutch at about 2,000 rpms, if it was a burnout competition, i would have won, but i had to let off and it gave me a 2.87 60' and i ran a 14.815!!! woo woo. :puke: I did hit 107.19 mph though.

Second Run,
Lower TP down to 26. Small burnout to warm up. Launched a slightly lower RMPS and didnt dump it as hard(dont remember) left me a 60' of 2.20 but i spun after a hard shift into 2nd and had to let off a little bit cause it left like i was going sideways. :surprise:very scary. Ended up with a 13.707 at 106.57 mph.

Third Run,
Same as above, dont remember my launch but it bogged i think, giving me a 60' of 2.46 and i hit the rev limitor in 2nd i think:oops: giving me a 13.826 at 106.96.

Fourth Run and last,
Same as above, i tried to slip the clutch a little more, and got a 60' of 2.27, the rest went pretty good, comparatively, and i ran 13.504 at 106.83 mph.

So yeah, FML, although it was a blast, and i cant wait to do it again and learn how launch and drive! Just figured id share and de-credit myself in front of you guys!

Well you knocked 1.3 seconds off your first run, so at least you're heading in the right direction! I'm going to be making my first ever trip to the track in the next month or so, so it's going to be interesting for me as well. My car isn't nearly as fast as yours though, so I won't have to worry about the wheel spin.

Thanks for posting your experience. It'll help others that are making their first track runs. :)

LOL! I haven't run yet. Don't get too comfortable with that title. I have a feeling one of a few things will happen to me. I'll roast the tires or my clutch. If I can launch this thing on the shitty stock tires I'm hoping for mid to high 12's. I could end up with mid to high 13's though.

not bad for your first time to the track! all I can say is find a back road somewhere with no people or cops and practice a few launches! Let the car spin bad and see how it responds so you are ready for whatever it brings! Launching of the car is never easy expecially with the manual and lots of HP.

Do not let that get you down. Many of us were 1st time racers when we got these cars.

Thanks guys! We all have to learn I guess, it just sucks knowing that i have a monster car with an anti-driver mod.

better than a good driven in a Kia :) launching a car is an art... you will learn it in time. I remebr drag racing a prochrged Camaro SS it took me 10 plus times to get a decent 60ft with it.

The times will come down with more practice for sure. Your car is putting down some really good power and coupled with it being your first time, it really could have been a lot worse. Next time I go, I will let you know and we can get those times where they should be.

Maybe I'll take the wheel ;) jk

Heck, some of us were nowhere near 1st time racers when we got these cars, and still struggled to figure them out at first! I have managed to shave nearly 6 tenths off from my trial runs. Mine weren't bad (13.729 @ 104.55, 2.317 60 ft, and 13.716 @ 102.81, 2.187 go ft), but the left plenty of room for improvement. The G8 is by no means an easy car to race well, but you'll almost definitely be better next time out!

This is why almost all drag racers run automatics. Consistancy in the launch is what its all about. The sticks are a blast on the street and the autos are the kings at the strip. If I wasn't going to drag race it at the track, M6 would be the most fun, I haven't seen any gxp sticks break into the 12's, unless I missed a post, one of our forum guys ran 12.81 with a bone stock gxp. Still you got yours down to 13.50's and thats a huge improvement from where you started. Congrats, keep trying and you'll get it down a little lower next time. You have the hp and torque, now the launch is where your gonna see the improvements.
