So say you have invested some money in your G8 and it is pushing a lot of power and you have some stickies in the rear to hook up. Now imagine that you have suddenly noticed a strange sound and uh oh, the stock tranny (auto) is completely ruined in your prized possession. Now what? What aftermarket (or not) tranny would you guys put in this car that is capable of high horsepower (700+ rwp) and still streetable. How hard of install (custom fabrication) would it involve? Money is not a concern. Neither is the drive shaft, diff, etc.

Just curious...

and why do you ask? From what I've heard, no one has had issues with this tranny not taking the horsepower.

If i had to say intense's G8 would be the most likely BUT GM seriously under rated this trans.

RPM Transmissions has been playing with the 6L80E for some time. I am pretty sure they have developed the stuff to rebuild them to hold more power. Eventually there are going to be some tranny's letting loose but it will take 700-800 HP to really break it. There are a few guys with 600 HP out there and they seem to be holding up just fine.

I have said from day one of modding that the weakest link in these cars is the Drive-line. The tranny is well under rated HP-wise from what the guys I know that work at Hydromatic here in Toledo where our trannies are built are telling me.I will be going with the Intense of Hendrix drive lines if GM doesn't fix my issue soon.

Yep, I agree with Jay. I'm on drive shaft #2, this happened because I had drag radials on and experienced wheel hop.....

I used to think the trans was shit, inconsistent and glitchy, but once I learned how to tune it I got a lot more confidence in it.

We can have HD clutch packs installed in the 6L80E, with a HP rating of about 650rwhp.

To tell you the truth, I didn't have any real need of knowing. It will be a long time before me numbers are high enough to kill the tranny. I was just really curious as to what people would think.

And I think its awesome that GM put a auto in this car that is capable of that kind of power. Thats pretty rare.

Thanks for the support guys and more ideas or comments are always welcome.

Our transmission division has done a few of these "experimental" builds to see what we can add. Nothing has come in broken yet, so just some cautious and curious customers. We do have a 6L80 that will have 900+ RWHP that we will be building soon, so we will see what our upgrades can hold. But as mentioned, tuning is a huge factor in how these trans work/last.

Chris, do you guys do any tranny tuning on the 6l80e? Everyone I talked to had someone else tune the tranny and just bought the converters from you guys. Still looking at getting a 2600-2800, but cash has been tight and I have no one local that I trust to do the work and tune it.

unless you go to the track alot, i doubt you'll see much tranny failure. With the NOS kit on mine, playing every couple of days, I stil haven't experienced any trans issues other than the norm

Sorry no tuning yet. I have played around a little but not enough. I have a few local shops I can recommend for some tips.

There is a 850hp vette running around with our tranny that is still together.

Me to, I should learn. I'm so OCD, I think I'd end up being good at it....

At 600 rwhp it is just a matter of time if you want to race it regularly, depending on how much torque management the trans is using. If you have this kind of power and just get on it once in a while you will be fine, but if you semi compete at this power level it will not last a very long time (1-2 yrs tops).

Another thing, don't compare the vette to the G8, or the Camaro. Calibrations are diferent for all of them. As well as vehicle weight which changes load, wheels and tires are different, and rear gear ratios as well, etc. which changes durability.

How about at 450 rwhp?
