I was going to get a mini spare tire since I bought your spare tire tool kit. The guys at the gm parts house said,

"That item is $59.08. I personally wouldn't want to use a 17" spare on a 18" or 19" wheel, but that is strictly up to you. That is bad news for the internal gearing.

Thanks, Gene."

Your thoughts on this ???

As long as the tires are within 1/4 of what you have it wont hurt anything and its not like you would be driving on it for 1000s of miles.

Quick question, jack showed up today but the box had been ripped open during shipping. Looks like everything is here except the "Plastic cap remover tool for lug nut plastic caps 92171594", was that included? Is that something the insurance would cover?

There is PLENTY of room in that spare tire well. Take out the foam chunk that holds the air compressor today and look in there. Holds a 19" full size rim and tire with room to spare. Very 1950's!

Since there seems to be the same question asked over and over, will this jack fit with a full size spare, I figured I would take a photo essay of the outstanding kit that Pace Performance has put together for the G8.

Here we have the trunk of a 2009 G8 GT with the cargo net installed and otherwise empty.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4129&stc=1&d=1256944331

This is the spare tire area of the G8. The factory included foam core that holds the can of fix-a-flat and the air compressor has been removed, along with the upper spindle and anchor that held it in place. Keep the anchor and spindle, you will need these. The lower spindle that clips into the bottom of the spare tire well has been left in place.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4130&stc=1&d=1256944331

The first thing you install is the holder for the jack components. It is made of black plastic that matches the plastic in the cargo area better than these pictures show. It fits within three "humps" that exist in the spare tire well. Placement is only in one location, with the base of the scissors jack facing toward the front of the car.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4131&stc=1&d=1256944331

The first thing you're going to install is the lug nut cover removal tool.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4132&stc=1&d=1256944331

The tool installs on the right hand side of the jack tool kit holder (passenger side). There is a lip for the tool to hold onto so it will stay in place.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4133&stc=1&d=1256944331

If you look to the right you can see the tool in place.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4134&stc=1&d=1256944331

Next, you're going to install the scissors jack. You will need to "open" the jack, as it is shipped completely closed. The base of the jack faces the front of the car, the eyelet where the arm would turn the crank, faces to your right (passenger side). I found it was easiest to open the jack a bit, lay it on the tool holder, and then continue to turn the eyelet with my hand until it fell right into place. I then opened it a bit more, so that it would hold firmer, but I didn't crank it so open that it flexed the plastic.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4135&stc=1&d=1256944331

Next you're going to install the telescoping tire iron.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4136&stc=1&d=1256944331

The lug nut side of the tire iron installs on the left side of the tool holder (driver side). The lug nut side will sit pointing slightly down, and the tire iron neck sits on top of the jack.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4137&stc=1&d=1256944331

Continued in next post...

Seattle09GT
10-30-2009, 03:33 PM
The next thing you're going to install is the jack arm.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4138&stc=1&d=1256945172

There is a spindle that the arm installs into on the back hand left side (driver side) of the tool holder.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4139&stc=1&d=1256945172

And there is a hole in the arm that accommodates the spindle. So the tool can only be installed one way.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4140&stc=1&d=1256945172

After installing the arm into the holder, you are going to install the top section of the jack and tool holder. This is a piece of plastic with a diagram of a tire iron on it. You will install this appearing to be "upside down," with the finished side facing the tools, and the "unfinished" appearing side facing upward. This drops right over the tools and helps hold them in place.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4141&stc=1&d=1256945172

Next you're going to anchor it all down with the large plastic nut that attaches to the spindle. Notice in the picture the hollow of the lower spindle is still exposed. Remember, I said you'll need to keep the spindle that held the foam block in place, well, we're going to be using that soon. Turn this until the jack is firmly, but not violently, held down in place.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4142&stc=1&d=1256945172

Now get your full size spare, 18", 19" or 19" GXP rim and put it in the spare tire well. Tada! As you can see there is PLENTY of room left over with the jack, tool kit, holder, and full size 19" wheel in place as in my car.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4143&stc=1&d=1256945172

Next, take the spindle and cap that came with your G8 air compressor kit and lock the wheel down. Surprise! The cap fits right into the factor rim center hub, locking everything down into place. You don't need the center cap - you just use the one on the wheel you're replacing if you have flat.

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4144&stc=1&d=1256945172

Does it fit?

http://forum.grrrr8.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=4145&stc=1&d=1256945172

You bet it does!

Great job on that photo how-to!

I figured it all out last weekend when my kit came in from PACE, however I never thought of poking out the center hub on the spare tire and re-using the stock retainer piece. My spare 18" rim&tire are currently sitting on top of the pace kit, hasn't really moved around at all, but I think it would be better if it was anchored down.

I think I may pop out my center hub on the spare and try that.

Thanks for the how-to, got me thinking on how to improve as above! :woohoo:

Perfect timing as winter tires purchased today, mounted on stock 18's dealer threw in with my 19's summer only (another buyer replaced rims on the spot, and left stocks behind for some lucky sunnagun :) ). One of the replaced 19's screwed down over the new kit in the well, and I'm ready for anything winter can throw at me.

I was getting gas Christmas eve when a new BMW 3 series came banging into the station and went to the air pump and tried putting some air in his front left tire. Apparently the hole in his tire was bad since he banged out down the street 5 minutes later. I smiled knowing I had a real spare and jack kit incase I ever get a flat.

Like Norm, I got a new full size spare (matching 19" rim and tire) that fits perfectly in the trunk tire well. Now, I have the security of having a full size matching spare during my long trips, I do the 5 tire rotation at 6K miles (with the oil change), and the price was only about 1/2 the price of a new rim and tire (not counting the TPMS). In my view, its a very practical way to go. By the way, under the full sizer in the trunk, there is plenty of room for a GM scissor jack, the air compressor/inflator, and other emergency odds and ends.

I got mine in about a week ago. It fits perfectly under the stock 19" rim and tire. I agree, as others have said, that a spare should have came with the car. We had a puncture about 150 miles from home and were able to get it repaired but really like to have a "real " spare back there.

I received my spare tire kit and GXP diffuser a couple days ago and I am very happy with the quality and fast shipment of the parts. If the O.D. is darn close to the stock G8 GT O.D. I would guess there is a better than fair chance it will fit. There is still room to spare (no pun intended) with a 19" wheel with stock rubber.

You could always jack up your G8, take one of your 20" rims in there and see if it fits, the jack will certainly fit under the rim give the larger I.D. of the 20" rim (versus a 17" 18" and 19" which all fit around the jack and allow the cover to fully close).

If I was looking for a Camaro rim spare for my G8 and found that it fit, I would probably go with the 8" width rim; it won't sit as "tall" in the trunk and I am going to ASS-U-ME it is a bit lighter.

Yes the 8 is lighter. Thank you. I am going to try this.

FYI, the pricing adverstised in this thread is no longer valid. I placed my order with Pace and noted my grrrr8.net userid in the comments section of my order as instructed and my card was still charged the full amount. I emailed them this morning asking for a correction and received the following response:

Hello Nick,
I'm sorry but the price on the parts in this kit has gradually gone over the past few years and the current price on this kit is $208.95, We are not able to offer any further club discount on this kit. The original post was from 2010, I'm having Greg update the post now to reflect current pricing. I cannot give you any kind of refund.
Mark

An attempt to contact me prior to processing the order at full price would have been much appreciated, or working out something with me instead of a 'sorry' email. In tandem to that, correcting the thread for any future purchasers would probably have been a better way to handle the situation, but alas. Just beware potential buyers, there are no discounts for members of this board on this kit and presumably any other items like the rear diffuser etc. You will be paying full price!!! Hopefully we can work something out cordially. I fail to see how I am left responsible for Pace not updating or maintaining its promotional offers/specials.

Well, prices DO go up over the course of two years. I do understand where YOU are coming from though.

I realize you had a bad experience with Pace, but I've bought quite a bit from them and been VERY happy. I deal solely with Greg though.

You can't blame them for a price increase.

This thread is old and they are still cheaper than a few other places or buying parts at a dealer direct for the most part, few exceptions.

However, if they did not update the site and charge you full price not listed without contacting you...you should have the right to cancel an order. I was given a small refund when a company made a mistake, it wasn't even $5 but still...I did not even ask for it.

Did you wait until you got billed, see it at checkout and still did the order or?

Nick, sorry for your bad experience. I forget that not everyone just "goes to Greg" for Pace products. Consider me lazy, but I e-mail Greg (or PM him) when something is needed that Pace MIGHT have! He has always furnished excellent service and good advice. Of course this does not change the "bad taste" in you mouth--but since Pace generally has really good prices, it may help you have a good (and money saving experience) should you choose to use them again.
