How to replace wheel studs?
I broke a rear wheel stud while installing my winter wheels. It appears to have been cracked. And it was on the same wheel hub on which I broke one a couple years ago. The dealer replaced it, and I believe they removed the rear hub to do it. Is it really necessary to remove the hub or can they be replaced on the car?

It's claimed that they can be replaced on the car, but it may require removing a small portion of the dust shield. You can rotate the hub to line up with the broken stud and drive it out.

I just did two on the wife's GT a few weeks back.
One had been broken for about a month, then I saw a 2nd missing so it was time to fix them.
Drilled a hole in the backing plate between the caliper mounting pads, pop off the parking brake shoe, and drive the old out and new in.
It was actually pretty simple to do if you can live with a hole in the backing plate.

You could always use a silicone hole cover or closed grommet to close the hole if you wish. The silicone will withstand being close to hot brakes.

I would get a plug / grommet to cover the new hole and drill the back side for access
Unless you want to proactively remove a hub in this cold weather.

How big a hole will I need? The biggest bit I think I have is 3/8", maybe 1/2".

If the rear hubs are similar to the fronts, I'd just pull it- that way you can work on the bench (using a vise to press studs), vs sitting on the concrete floor. The fronts I did (longer studs for Brembos) were cake in the vise.

Rears are not the same as the fronts.
I don't know the size I used, I used a step bit to make it large enough. It only needs to be large enough to fit the stud head.

Step bit is the way to go.
.750 hole should do nicely, and body plugs that size are plentiful, but best installed from the rear of the dust shield.
