UPDATE TO ORIGINAL THREAD: I ended up buying new plugs/wires and the upstream O2 sensor and replaced it all.
the code is gone. if I had to guess, I just needed to swap the O2 sensor but Rick mentioned plugs and wires so I threw money at the issue.
Car seems to be much stronger and drives better. Winning!
